About this listen
Detective Everett Larkin of New York City’s Cold Case Squad has been on medical leave since catching the serial killer responsible for what the media has dubbed the “Death Mask Murders.” But Larkin hasn’t forgotten that another memento—another death—is waiting to be found.
Summer brings the grisly discovery of human remains in the subway system, but the clues point to one of Larkin’s already-open cases, so he resumes active duty. And when a postmortem photograph, akin to those taken during the Victorian Era, is located at the scene, Larkin requests aid from the most qualified man he knows: Detective Ira Doyle of the Forensic Artists Unit.
An unsolved case that suffered from tunnel vision, as well as the deconstruction of death portraits, leads Larkin and Doyle down a rabbit hole more complex than the tunnels beneath Manhattan. And if this investigation isn’t enough, both are struggling with how to address the growing intimacy between them. Because sometimes, love is more grave than murder.

Slow burn romance mystery
C. S. Poe writes characters that are extremely realistic and relatable.
Once you get to know them they feel as comfortable as an old friend.
Larkin and Doyle are back in the thick of things trying to solve a very current mystery in the New York subway system that leads to a cold case.
The mystery is thoroughly engaging in itself but it's the slow burn of epic proportions between Larkin and Doyle that had me on the edge of my seat.
I don't think fans of the series would have it any other way because it suits them perfectly.
Larkin is still dealing with the demons of his past and this case brings to light the fact that Doyle has secrets of his own to deal with.
Both are still leery of making any overtures and I for one can't wait for that explosive encounter.
Kale Williams did an amazing job narrating and bringing the story to life.

Story and audio perfection!
This is one of the best series out there!
Another well laid out, brilliantly executed murder/mystery with a slowly building romance between 2 very memorable characters - detectives Larkin and Doyle. As they move to set up the next stage of their relationship, they deal with more cold case murders, ones that hit close to home for both men in different ways. We get to know more about Doyle's past and we see Larkin become more open to Doyle, accepting that Doyle really cares for him, unconditionally.
The narration by Kale Williams, is the perfect complement to this wonderful story. He IS Larkin, from the believable monotone voice adopted for him, to the empathy he shows in portraying a man with a misunderstood disability. He also manages to make Larkin a lovable person. Then there's his voice for Doyle - whiskey smooth, with flecks of humour and tiny pricks of pain.
Kale Williams is a master performer and when paired with a good storyteller, he provides a wonderful audio experience.
CS Poe pours so much detail, history and knowledge into the story that it honestly feels like it should be optioned for a television series on PBS. Highly recommend!!!

Soooooooo good!
I purposely waited for this story to come out on audio before experiencing it.
I love CS Poe's books, i am yet to find another author who writes MM mystery/suspense in the same way she does. This author has struck the perfect balance between thoroughly researched historical fact and impossible to walk away from storyline.
Evie and Ira are awesome. CS Poe has got me so invested in each of the MC's as individuals as well as their journey together. They are perfect in their imperfection and were just meant to be 😊
Kale Williams is a genius! every voice is clear and distinct from the next, and his delivery makes you experience every emotion. He is a go-to narrator for me, and I'm so god damn happy he's narrating CS Poes books - they are a match made in heaven xxx

⭐️ Perfection ⭐️
Memento Mori 2 is written for adults that acknowledge mature experiences, celebrate hard won lessons and understand the need for constant effort to rise above negativity. At its heart, this book is a clarion call for compassion. The words capture how devastating but also how achingly wonderful living is and how transformative loving is. Larkin is defined by his thoughts and in Book 1, those thoughts were the bane of his existence. In Book 2, he realized his thoughts could be his happiness. That Doyle is the slow burn catalyst to his emancipation is beautifully explored and written. 🩵 I love that the most suspenseful part of the story was when Larkin forgot a meeting - l could not breathe in fearful anticipation!! To be clear, this does no disservice to an otherwise cracking, well researched and paced procedural with strong characterizations and a riveting mystery, because every story telling component was perfectly realized.
🎧 Meanwhile, Kale Williams?!? Oh. My. Goodness. His narration of the MCs is everything. Listen to how he speeds up his vocalization to convey spiraling thoughts; how his pauses are so considered; to how he emotes the tender, quiet moments and yet powers the adrenaline fueled 'penny drops' and suspect chases. As a gift to humanity, Williams must patent how Doyle emotionally conveys so much when he simply says Evie 🔥. I adore that the way Larkin says 'Ira' lacks ease and instead reflects his very difficult but conscious and determined effort to reach out to Doyle. No question, the planets aligned and brought us this Poe/Williams collaboration. An outstanding book.

This is the second book in the series and just as enjoyable as the first,I love the developing storyline and can't wait to hear the next book as soon as its on audio!
Although it's a hfn ending it's still a cliffhanger and I'm really eager to see what happens next.

🚇 Terrific narration and story 🚇
🎧🎧🎧 Audio Review 🎧🎧🎧
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Fantastic. I may not have gotten on with Kale Williams with some of his other narrations, but his interpretation of Everett and Ira is amazing, and the amount of research that the author must have done to come up with this police procedural series set in the Big Apple 🍎🍏, combined with the very slow-burning romance between Everett and Ira is outstanding! Some of the romantic lines are definitely puddle of goo moments ✨️. Cannot wait for Broadway Butchery around the middle of the year, and yes, I'll definitely be listening to the audio again.

Five stars aren't enough
This is not so much a good series as a truly great series. Beautifully written, engrossing characters, good tricky crime story with a wonderful, slowly unfolding romance.
