About this listen

An intense and inspiring story of sporting triumph, from World, Commonwealth and National racing champion and Olympic silver medalist Lizzie Armitstead.

On the eve of the 2016 Olympic Games, the biggest moment of her life, Lizzie Armitstead's career was thrown into turmoil. After being cleared to ride the Games at the final hour following a successful court appeal to overturn an alleged missed drugs test, the ensuing leak and backlash threatened to engulf her. Now, for the first time, she tells her story and reveals how she went from world champion and darling of Team GB road cycling to one of the most scrutinised athletes in British sport - how it happened, why it happened and how Lizzie cleared her name and came out fighting.

In Steadfast Lizzie Armitstead takes the listener to the heart of the most demanding of endurance sports and the challenges faced by one of its most gifted competitors: from sexism and the fight for equality to doping and the incredible sacrifices required to self-coach herself to world titles.

From the rolling hills of Yorkshire through to the treacherous climbs of the Vista Circuit in Rio de Janeiro - through setbacks, life lessons and ups and downs of a professional life in cycling - Steadfast is an intense and inspiring story of sporting triumph.

Not of fan of british cycling then!

What did you like best about Steadfast? What did you like least?

interesting don't get me wrong and I was never at a point of turning it off, the background and her story was great, fan of the rider and the sport, but at times she " does go on a bit to much" when expressing her lack of love for BC. Not that I disagree with the comments but the book is for enjoyment, rather than repeated campaigning.

Lifting the lid on team GB ladies cycling

I must confess that I do not really follow cycling, until I saw Lizzie Armistead on the news regarding this book I could not have told you anything about her, though the idea piqued my interest.

This is an interesting book about the ladies side of competitive cycling, whilst one big part of the book focuses on a tough period of time in Lizzie's life when there was a false doping allegation against her, the main essence of the book lifts the lid on the sport generally and the lack of support the ladies team receives when compared to the men.

This was an eye-opener, when she explains the vast difference in funding and even the availability of dedicated coaches in the sport for the ladies team, moreover the occasional disregard for her health and welfare and that of the other members of the team. It was also quite stark to realise that like many other female athletes she would so often be judged on her appearance rather than by her achievements as a sportsperson. It is a real window into the world of professional cycling and reveals it not as "glamorous" as you would think.

This is quite an inspiring book since it really emphasises perseverance and determination and working hard for what you want.

The narration was very nice and clear and made this very easy to listen to.

Interesting story but....

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

For cyclists and non-cyclists who are interested in Lizzies' story and the issues at British Cycling will find this a fascinating listen.

If you’ve listened to books by Lizzie Armitstead before, how does this one compare?

N/A

How could the performance have been better?

The narrators delivery is very distracting and seems to break down the written words into individual sentences that do not flow together into a coherent narrative. Despite my interest in Lizzies' story I cannot get enthusiastic about listening to this book and have only got as far as chapter 4 after owning the book for several weeks.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment at the narrators delivery.

Any additional comments?

I would not buy another book narrated by Katy Sobey.
