Summary

The starship Freedom is just a museum ship...until the aliens attack.

The starship Freedom was once a mighty warship. Today, she's a tourist attraction. The space wars ended long ago. The Freedom is now a flying museum; the tourists love it. The Changing of the Guard, the starfighter aerobatics, the starboard cannon salute...it's the best show in the galaxy.

James King commands the starship Freedom. He hates his job. He was a real soldier once, back when the Freedom was a real warship. He never imagined himself running a tourist trap. Right after Christmas, he plans to retire. Then, on Christmas day, the aliens attack. Horrifying aliens. Creatures of claws, fangs, and endless malice. Within hours, they devastate Earth's military. Millions die. So much for retirement.

The aliens spare the starship Freedom. After all, she's only a tourist attraction. But not to Commander King. He will get his beloved starship battle-ready. He will enter the fight. The Freedom will fly to war again!

Battlestar Galactica meets Starship Troopers in this sci-fi adventure from Daniel Arenson, the USA Today best-selling author of Earthrise.

Good action story

Total enjoyed the book. Characters took a while to get established but a very good fast paced space opera.
Looking forward to book two.

Worth a listen

Little bit OTT, but idea is sound basis for the book and possible series.

Narrator should work on his English accents as it makes the ruling class sound like entitled clowns.......then again maybe it is unintentionally appropriate given 2016, 2019 and 2022.

Good story

I really enjoyed the book, the narration was clear, the story intriguing but there was too much repetition about people and place's

Slow to start standard si-fi adventure story

It proved slow and difficult at first to get into but slowly it warmed up and found it a passable adventure story. It will be interesting to continue the series but not as a priority.

Battlestar Galactica, but a rehashed bargain version

I'm struggling here, not to be too harsh because... This book does what it says. It's like when you turn on the TV and there's a dumb Sci-fi B movie on and you lose yourself in it, but you can't help wincing occasionally.
I'm a huge Space Opera Space navy fan, I like Jack Campbell, Elizabeth Moon ( if you are a fan of these, please don't bother with this unless you are really really bored and desperate in the airport) I also love the new adaptation of the Battlestar Galactica. So much is blatantly lifted from it.
The battle scenes are IMHO not well written. The characters are paper thin and cliche and it's repetitive and jingoistic
I just find it painfully painfully derivative of BG. You could say it's meant to be a tribute, but honestly I don't think it adds enough. At first I was thinking it was satire, like Starship troopers movie, but it's not clever enough.
There are some nice touches, but it lost me at "Equalism - it was like socialism and fascism had a baby"
The narration.... was not my cup of tea but then it suited the tone of the book, but since I didn't like the book that's pretty irrelevant. The narrator reminded me of the YouTube channel Honest trailers voiceover.
Having said all this, If you want a big, flashy alien audiobook with no nuance, it might be for you. Just listen to the sample first!

Battlestar Galactica with Spiders but enjoyable

enjoyable story to listen to while working or doing stuff round the house. Nothing revolutionary but has some interesting bad guys and technology in the world.

will use my credits for the rest of them

I'm partial to the 2003 reboot of Battlestar Galactica

and this seems to have its plot points taken from the miniseries minus jumps.
