About this listen

The era of the Old Republic is a dark and dangerous time, as Jedi Knights valiantly battle the Sith Lords and their ruthless armies. But the Sith have disturbing plans—and none more so than the fulfillment of Darth Scabrous’s fanatical dream, which is about to become nightmarish reality.

Unlike those other Jedi sidelined to the Agricultural Corps—young Jedi whose abilities have not proved up to snuff—Hestizo Trace possesses one extraordinary Force talent: a gift with plants. Suddenly her quiet existence among greenhouse and garden specimens is violently destroyed by the arrival of an emissary from Darth Scabrous. For the rare black orchid that she has nurtured and bonded with is the final ingredient in an ancient Sith formula that promises to grant Darth Scabrous his greatest desire.

But at the heart of the formula is a never-before-seen virus that’s worse than fatal—it doesn’t just kill, it transforms. Now the rotting, ravenous dead are rising, driven by a bloodthirsty hunger for all things living—and commanded by a Sith Master with an insatiable lust for power and the ultimate prize: immortality . . . no matter the cost.

Critic reviews

“Brilliant . . . This book combines two of my favorite things on earth: the Star Wars universe and the undead.” (Tommy Wirkola, director of Dead Snow)

A prequel you'll enjoy first time round.

Great story, nice to hear about characters not remotely associated with Skywalker saga.

only flaw 2 flaws I have is the lack of using the Force, considering the characters are mostly Sith. And the scream sound effects.... oh deary me. Terrible effect which is used A LOT. Overall a great book.

Not for the faint-hearted, or gardeners

I thought I might struggle with this book. There's barely a likeable character in it. For a book set in a school, it's filled with a lot of budding sociopaths. But, that does make it more satisfying when the main plot kicks in.

There's a lot of gore and... smells. So much so that I could well imagine the macabre scenes playing out. If you don't mind that, or a plot that unfolds as characters run for their lives, you'll have a good time.

The main character has a force talent, and job, that I don't think I'd heard of before. That made for a very unique -yet still very Star Wars-like story. Great writing and performance.

The performance gets better

The actor is poor at the beginning, he gets better as the book goes on but it's difficult to listen to towards the start of the book.
The book it's self is not his strongest, though still very much worth a read

Very different kind of star wars story

I really enjoyed the dark, twisted tone of this book but its still a classic star wars adventure at heart. John Glover's narration is perfect.

very grotesquely visceral and morbid.

not what I expected from a star wars story. more akin to a nurgle-oriented 40k story.
not at all bad. just very dark and bleak.
