End of term mixed emotions
Each part of this series has a school year feel about it.
Memories of last year’s comings and goings, not always favourable.
New faces amongst pupils and staff.
Similar timetable but different enough to keep one guessing, and dreading the coursework and inevitability of the end of year exam.
We look forward with eagerness and dread to the end of the final term yet relief is tinged with sadness while saying goodbye to those we spent some time with, again, not always favourable.
Yes, a long summer holiday maybe a carrot to some but I can’t wait for a new year and new term to begin and look forward to seeing the old pals again, along with the grumpy and smelly headmaster.
There will be a new cast of scary teachers that poke their heads around the door and we have to work out how to sail by without attracting too much of their attention as they try to make their own favourable trail in the mud left by ambitious civil service bureaucrats.
Along with the others, Spook Street is a fine yarn, brilliantly performed by Sean the narrator who delivers a magnificent mixture of brutality, pathos and humour throughout.
It is impossible not to love Jackson Lamb, though perhaps it would be easier at a reasonable distance and a through draught! Who cares if it is credible or all too believable, or not? The Slough House stories are a perfect antidote for the dreary Smiley and ridiculous Bond.

The best of the Slough House books.
This is the best of the Slough House novels. Herron really keeps the reader guessing and gripped to the story. The chase scene involving Luisa and Markus is particularly memorable for it’s sense of real time danger.

Great Spooks!
It’s a series that gets better and better. The plot twists and turns are at least the equal of le Carré and the performance is superb.

Superb
I’m not sure it’s the done thing to laugh out loud quite so much while reading a spook novel but there’s comedy gold in every book. The plots are imaginative and entertaining even if I did guess the familial twist quite early on. Destined to sit in my top 5 favourites.
