----
A moving and gripping story about three extraordinary women from the Richard & Judy recommended bestselling author Julie Cohen.
Viola has an impossible talent. Her photographs seem to capture things invisible to the eye - only a leap of faith could mean they are real. Until one day a woman arrives in Viola's life and sees the truth - about her pictures, and about Viola.
Henriette is a celebrated spirit medium, carrying nothing but her secrets with her as she travels the country. The moment she meets Viola, a dangerous connection is sparked - but Victorian society is no place for reckless women.
Meanwhile, across the world, invisible threads join Viola and Henriette to another woman who lives in secrecy, hiding her dangerous act of rebellion in plain sight.
Faith. Courage. Love. What will they risk for freedom?

Fantastic book!
I absolutely loved this book. Beautifully written and the narration did not let it down. The characters and occurrences were so well described, I could picture the whole thing playing out in my mind. Don’t be put off by the rather depressing start, as the story starts to move at a faster pace and soon draws in the listener. I was sorry when it ended!

Oddly unique
A well connected story with depth and history to it, I would have liked more development of the love story between Viola & Henrietta and less so of Henriettes origins, but overall a modest listen without any cliches and it’s own unique feels. Clearly well researched.

Great story telling
I found this very moving. Shows how very different characters can bond even on a wobbly base of deception even if for all the right reasons. Life and love was not easy for men or women back then and particularly if you sensed more than what could be seen by all.

A good story, well narrated.
I listened to the audiobook on Audible, narrated by Gemma Whelan.
After her father's death, Viola and her new husband, Jonah, her childhood sweetheart, move to Dorset. Viola, a keen photographer, finds she has a new talent for capturing the ghostly images of those dearly departed. With the encouragement of Henriette, a celebrated spirit medium, Viola finds herself caught up in a whirlwind of uncharted territory. Meanwhile, Jonah is hiding a haunted past. Each have thier secrets...
I wanted to love this book more than I did. The story was well thought out, but there was a lot of back and forth with past and present chapters that I kept losing where I was. This may have been highlighted with the audiobook; perhaps if I had the physical copy in hand, it would have been more obvious.
Now saying all that, the storyline was everything I would look for. Historically set in Victorian England, with sprits and a vivid gothic thread is woven throughout. Unfortunately, it just didn't quite hit the right note with me.
