About this listen

In this New York Times bestseller, comedic actor, producer, and writer Rainn Wilson explores the problem-solving benefits that spirituality gives us to create solutions for an increasingly challenging world.

The trauma that our world experienced in recent years—as result of both the pandemic and societal tensions that threaten to overwhelm us—has been unprecedented and is not going away anytime soon. It is clear that existing political and economic systems are not enough to bring the change that the world needs. In this book, Rainn Wilson explores the possibility and hope for a spiritual revolution, a “Soul Boom” in order to address today’s greatest issues—mental health, racism and sexism, climate change, and economic injustice.

For Wilson, this is very serious and essential pursuit, but he brings great humor and his own unique perspective to the conversation. He feels that, culturally, we’ve thrown the baby out with the bathwater—and that bathwater is spirituality, Faith and the Sacred. The baby is us, and we are in need of profound healing and a unifying understanding of the world that religion provides. Sharing his experience of losing his father during the summer of 2020 as well as his personal struggles with addiction and mental health, Wilson is an empathetic narrator and thinker who listeners will appreciate and trust. Wilson’s approach to spirituality—the non-physical, eternal aspects of ourselves—is relatable and will apply to people of all beliefs, even the skeptics. Filled with genuine insight—not to mention enlightening Kung Fu and Star Trek references—the book offers the keys to delving into ancient wisdom and seeking out practical, transformative answers to life’s biggest questions.

So much to consider

Such a loving, kind book. Thank you Rainn Wilson. I struggle constantly to be the best I can. Your example is aspirational indeed.

A sublime take on everything

There's something beautifully cathartic about listening to Dwight Schrute discuss the multitudes contained within the human experience with such eloquence and wit. The part of me that's not so idealistic (fortunately, the smaller part) thinks that many of my western peers may struggle to grasp the nuances laid out in his words. I'll sanctimoniously say that's no one's fault, our separation conditioning goes deep. I fully believe that the spiritual revolution discussed here is already underway (we have no other real choice). I also think that Rainn Wilson seems like the kind of person that will skyrocket in cultural significance post-humously, because his brand of spiritual activism is so critically important to where we are headed. The fact he's done it off the back of being Dwight is testament to how modern spirituality will look. No wrathful sky daddies, just brilliant minds and hearts who are capable of balancing lightheartedness with sublime compassion and existential wisdom.

Visionary powerhouse.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it Dwight? Is it Rainn? Who cares. I love them all. Written and performed with incredible intelligence, warmth and wit. I needed to hear of a world with spirituality at the helm and at its core. Of a ‘new religion’ that would heal our world and take it forward in a loving and fair way. This isn’t an airy fairy ‘wouldn’t it be nice’ but an honest ‘on the end of your nose’ solution to all our problems. Rainn says he isn’t the man to do this. Think again Rainn. Are you Caine or Captain Kirk? I for one, would back you.

Inspiring and Hopeful

A truly gorgeous book. Aligned so closely to my own current thoughts and attitudes to life, the world, nature, and the overall meaning of it all. We need more people like Rainn.

Global Remedy

Rainn writes with the full gamut of humour through to serious considerations and explores global problems from an individual level through to collective survival. As a Baha’i, I realise that Boom Soul was going to be what it was, but what a brilliant way of introducing it.
This book really does give a fresh perspective on the concept of devotion, service, God, and a spiritual plan for the survival of humanity. Oh and I really quite like the car analogy by the way.

perfection in everyway

Everyone needs to listen/read this book. The importance of the book, it's message is critical for society and how Rainn explains it all is intriguing and enjoyable. Thank you Rainn, now to buy the physical copy and to listen/read over my favourite parts again and actively take what's written into action.

Star Trek

Men born in the 60s have watched far too much Star Trek if you ask me.

It’s nice that Star Trek instilled some blind optimism in their young viewers, but I’m afraid that the morals, ethics, values, principles and standards that are requisites for religion and spirituality are not compatible with free market capitalism and we seem to have decided that capitalism is king.

However, if you do ever get Soul Boom together, hit me up. I’m there.
