Summary

It’s January 1995, and Franny Banks has just six months left of the three-year deadline she set for herself when she came to New York, dreaming of Broadway and doing "important" work. But all she has to show for her efforts so far is a part in an ad for ugly Christmas sweaters, and a gig waiting tables at a comedy club. Her roommates - her best friend, Jane; and Dan, an aspiring sci-fi writer - are supportive, yet Franny knows a two-person fan club doesn’t exactly count as success. Everyone tells her she needs a backup plan, and though she can almost picture moving back home and settling down with her perfectly nice ex-boyfriend, she’s not ready to give up on her goal of having a career like her idols, Diane Keaton and Meryl Streep. Everything is riding on the upcoming showcase for her acting class, where she’ll finally have a chance to perform for people who could actually hire her. Meanwhile, her bank account is rapidly dwindling, her father wants her to come home, and her agent doesn’t return her calls. Practice practice practice
It's clear early on that the writing improves markedly with every chapter. The content and story itself far exceeded my expectations, surprisingly perspicacious for a debut short novel about a struggling young actress. Witty and warm. Looking forward to more from Lauren Graham.

I love Lauren Graham

Warm, funny take on the life of a struggling actor
Where does Someday, Someday, Maybe rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It's great – quite a bit shorter than most of the books I tend to read, but I was in the mood for something lighter and shorter, and it fit the bill perfectly.
Would you be willing to try another book from Lauren Graham? Why or why not?
I'd definitely listen to more stuff either by, or just read by, Lauren Graham again. She has a bone-dry delivery, matched by her writing, that allows both humour and pathos to come through.
What does Lauren Graham bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
There's an inherent advantage to the author reading their own work anyway – you hear the dialogue in the voices, and with the cadences, that best deliver the humorous or the romantic lines without risk of misinterpretation.But Graham being a now-successful actress who would have been at the point of her career where Franny is in the mid-90s adds additional levels. Not only can we choose to believe that there is an element of autobiography in there (whether there is or is not), we know that, at the very least, the situations in which Franny finds herself are real. And that makes her more real to us as a result.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
She's given herself three years to make it as an actor. Maybe this time…

In print, there are visual depictions of the heroine Franny's Filofax diary, which break up the narrative at key points. It took me a while to discover that Audible places a PDF version of those pages in your library (they've since added a note to the book's description to this effect) – it's worth keeping them to hand so that you can read them at the appropriate points.

A story worth reading AND hearing!
Read the book and audio is just as entertaining! Lauren Graham brings the story to life in a way a lot of other narrators couldn't, and I couldn't stop laughing!

A book Lorelei would read

Loved it!
Beautifully written in simple words, easy to read/listen to. All I can say is that this is a very Lauren Graham book, it's funny, entertaining and positive from the beginning to the last line. The fact that's read by the author is a big plus, her happy voice brings the story to life and makes you feel like you're almost part of it.

Fantastic book to slip into
I picked up the audio version of this book, I've been eyeing the book for a while and opted for the audio version because it was recorded by Lauren Graham herself. Im a bit of a fan, I loved her in Gilmore Girls and Parenthood. However i quickly realised that listening to Graham reading was a mistake... I couldn't help but picture Lorelai instead of Franny in the scenes. And it took me a while to shake off the ghost of Lorelai and let Franny tell her tale.
To begin with it felt a little Bridget Jones' Diary-esque, in the way that she mentions her Filofax pages as a way to mark the passing of time, but that was about where the comparisons ended.
I liked Franny almost immediately, but again that may be because to begin with my brain was seeing another character in her place. At times she felt so very naive and oblivious to the "definitely not boyfriend material" even when he makes it pretty obvious he'd like to be considered for that role... and the charming guy from acting class was so far up his own behind its a wonder he actually manages to see anyone else.
