About this listen

Years after losing his lower right leg in a motorcycle crash, Robert Kull traveled to a remote island in Patagonia's coastal wilderness with equipment and supplies to live alone for a year. He sought to explore the effects of deep solitude on the body and mind and to find the spiritual answers he'd been seeking all his life. With only a cat and his thoughts as companions, he wrestled with inner storms while the wild forces of nature raged around him. The physical challenges were immense, but the struggles of mind and spirit pushed him even further.

Solitude: Seeking Wisdom in Extremes is the diary of Kull's tumultuous year. Chronicling a life distilled to its essence, Solitude is also a philosophical meditation on the tensions between nature and technology, isolation and society. With humor and brutal honesty, Kull explores the pain and longing we typically avoid in our frantically busy lives as well as the peace and wonder that arise once we strip away our distractions. He describes the enormous Patagonia wilderness with poetic attention, transporting the reader directly into both his inner and outer experiences.

Interesting Listening

An extremely interesting listen. I don't like Robert but found the book very thought provoking.

Disappointing.

I have listened to 8 hours of this story and I'm close to giving up on it. I am not getting what I thought I would from listening to his story.

I do however believe that it isn't wrong, as everyones perspective and experience is different, but I do not relate to Bob or feel inspired by his adventure.

I am a cat lover and I feel that the way he treated the cat demonstrated his patience and how he isnt able to open his heart up that much because it reflects in the way he treats the cat. How we treat others is a reflection of ourselves - if that's true then the writer is a reflection of how he treated the cat??
I also feel that he is expecting a light bulb moment and for something to just magically happen but he's half way through his journey and he doesnt seem to have got that moment.

I am unsure if going into the wilderness with the pressure of the university and having to find something to prove to others tainted the experience? something about it just isn't right to me.
Part of me wants to finish the whole story to give a fairer review based on the end result and what resolution he comes too.
But! like I said, I dont relate to him and so I dont think I will be satisified from getting nothing heart warming after so many hours listening so far.

I regret buying this book

I was very interested in the book but ended up regretting that I bought it. I assume I would have enjoyed it more if the author didn’t appear to be such an dislikable person. All he does is whine! Anxiety here and scared there. Of what? Life? Get a grip man, seriously. If you’re that afraid of nature then stay at home! That together with the scenes that with his pet that border on animal abuse really makes me wish that I hadn’t given him my money.
