Summary
From the Sunday Times top ten best-selling author of The Psychopath Test, a captivating and brilliant exploration of one of our world's most underappreciated forces: shame.
"It's about the terror, isn't it?"
"The terror of what?" I said.
"The terror of being found out."
For the past three years, Jon Ronson has travelled the world, meeting recipients of high-profile public shamings. The shamed are people like us - people who, say, made jokes on social media that came out badly or made mistakes at work. Once their transgressions were revealed, collective outrage circled with the force of a hurricane, and the next thing they knew they were being torn apart by an angry mob, jeered, demonized, sometimes even fired from their jobs.
A great renaissance of public shaming is sweeping our land. Justice has been democratized. The silent majority are getting a voice. But what are we doing with our voice? We are mercilessly finding people's faults. We are defining the boundaries of normality by ruining the lives of those outside it. We are using shame as a form of social control.
Simultaneously powerful and hilarious in the way only Jon Ronson can be, So You've Been Publicly Shamed is a deeply honest book about modern life, full of eye-opening truths about the escalating war on human flaws - and the very scary part we all play in it.
Jon Ronson is an award-winning writer and documentary maker. He is the author of two best sellers, Them: Adventures with Extremists and The Men Who Stare at Goats, and two collections Out of the Ordinary: True Tales of Everyday Craziness and What I Do: More True Tales of Everyday Craziness. He lives in London.
This is an updated edition with new afterword, written and narrated by Jon Ronson.

Enlightening
I am devouring every Jon Ronson book at the moment. This is incredible. Each story weaves together beautifully, and it has made me much more aware of how dangerous social media shamings are. I don't think we're in any better position 2 or 3 years down the line, but I'll certainly be speaking up next time.

recording
only criticism would be the audio recording, the quality is inconsistent and sometimes quite bad...
but don't let that put you off the content. highly thought provoking and well structured. would recommend

An interesting journey
This is a well put together account of the author's journey through the realities social shaming. Plenty of opportunities for self-reflection, often prompted by the writers own willingness to risk laying themselves bare every now and then

Beautiful complexity...
I couldn't stop listening! Great work awesome storytelling. The book is such a brilliant and a very important spotlight on all of us... Loved every each second of it! Extra thanks for the last chapter ( covering the afterlife of the book..) I hope one day we can see and listen a round-table talk with Jon Ronson, Jonathan Haidt and Bernie Brown. That would be fantastic.

A Jon Ronson classic
A really excellent listen and poignant perspective on the digital age of social media. Better for hearing him narrate his own book. Now onto another JR I think...

Extremely relevant right now
Really great and interesting, in the immediate aftermath of 2020 and the storms of nonsense on social media, this is incredibly relevant and prescient. Particularly liked the afterword which talks about some of the criticisms the book got, which is very interesting, and an excellent audio performance from the author. Highly recommend.

Particularly relevant in 2020
The current climate of cancel culture is a double-edged sword.
And Jon Ronson addresses both edges of it with compassion and empathy, having this book in my brain now, I am compelled to think differently about why I post the things I post.
Issues are more than your knee jerk reaction to isolated facts.

A fascinating insight into the world of online shaming and the Twitter storm culture
Jon Ronson writes about many cases which show how the Internet community can tear someone's life apart for a misjudged joke or a comment that has back fired. It's an excellent read / listen - insightful but also enjoyable partly because of all the exciting schadenfreude that is covered in the book.
