Summary
George Smiley was summoned from his dubious retirement by two seemingly unconnected events - an old woman in Paris is promised the return of a daughter she will never see, and a handover is to take place on a steamer in Hamburg.

Totally gripping.
Michael Jayston delivers yet another outstanding performance. The world of George Smiley revolves around you, as you are taken to the streets of Paris right the way through to the watch towers and crossing points from East to West. No glamour, no car chases, an aversion for guns, just dirty amoral spy work. I loved it.

Excellent.
Just finished the Karla trilogy, first class. I read this trilogy when it was first published and it was good to revisit. The narrator was excellent as usual. Highly recommended.

Karla conclusion
Excellent story concluding the Karla trilogy. Expertly read by the late great Michael Jayston. Worth the listen

Storytelling at its best
This is a wonderful sequel to the sublime Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. In addition to the excitement of this gripping tale of espionage, Le Carre addresses notions such as compassion, moral ambiguity and human frailty. His characters are often flawed human beings, at times full of contradictions regarding duty and service. George Smiley is one of the great fictional characters. I loved this novel and have read it many times but somehow it is even better through the voice of the narrator Michael Jayston- he is, as ever, superb.

Slow, but beautifully written and read
Le Carré's style is detailed, slow and deliberate, but Michael Jayston's narration means it is gripping and colourful, despite the grey Cold War backdrop.
Jayston manages to evoke Alec Guinness' portrayal of George Smiley wonderfully, but the other characterisation is also excellent.
I would suggest reading Book 1 and 2 first - although this book works well on its own.

A convicing ending to the trilogy
The setting back in Europe, works better than An Honourable Schoolboy in the far east, the pace is fair and the trailing Smiley follows is believable and intriguing. Great ending

Excellent book and audio
I love John Le Carré “Smiley” character and with Michael Jayston excellent reading with a Myriad of voices it brings the book to life. Since buying this audiobook I gave listened to it every 4 or 5 weeks along with the other Smiley books (except the last one, which sadly wasn’t read my Michael).
