Summary

Nate Jackson’s Slow Getting Up is an unvarnished and uncensored memoir of everyday life in the most popular sports league in America - and the most damaging to its players - the National Football League.

After playing college ball at a tiny Division III school, Jackson, a receiver, signed as a free agent with the San Francisco 49ers, before moving to the Denver Broncos. For six seasons in the NFL as a Bronco, he alternated between the practice squad and the active roster, eventually winning a starting spot - a short, tenuous career emblematic of the average pro player.

Drawing from his own experience, Jackson tells the little-known story of the hundreds of everyday, "expendable" players whose lives are far different from their superstar colleagues.

From scouting combines to training camps, off-season parties to game-day routines, debilitating physical injuries - including degenerative brain conditions - to poor pensions and financial distress, he offers a funny, and shocking look at life in the NFL, and the young men who risk their health and even their lives to play the game.

The real NFL

Loved this audio book! I’ve read many books glamourising the NFL and when viewed from the top of the NFL mountain life is good. But this is about the real NFL, from someone who loved the game and was just trying to stay on a team! The injuries are hard to hear about at times, it’s a brutal sport, but the story awesome. Also the narration is one of the best. Nate Jackson is an antidote to the myth football players are not bright and articulate. Great narration!

Great insight with none of the NFL shine...

A fantastic insight into the real story of being an NFL player with none of the usual NFL gloss and hyperbole.

Jackson gives a brutally honest look into his career and his is a story that is probably shared by many hundreds of players who didn’t make it to the top of the NFL mountain as household names.

Amazing and truly captivating

Loved every second of this, Nate’s voice had me hooked in from the start. The most honest sports autobiography I’ve listened to in quite some time. I laughed along and empathised with Nate’s stories and experiences.
I admire his honesty and his descriptive writing style is beautiful and descriptive. He paints a picture with his words.

Really didn’t not want this book to end.

Hidden Gem

I wasn't expecting that much from this as it was on a deal but its inspiring, a sort of realistic hero's journey and the pulls the curtain on dark side of professional sports

Addictive story of a journeyman pro's NFL career

Would you listen to Slow Getting Up again? Why?

Yes, it is very honest and entertaining

Who was your favorite character and why?

Nate, of course

Which character – as performed by Nate Jackson – was your favourite?

Nate himself, there are times when he is living the dream of many wannabe sportsman, there are other times, real lows, no glossing over

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Strangely enough yes

Any additional comments?

It was a book I thought I might regret buying as at first Nate doesn't seem very likeable, but as his story plays out, I found myself rooting for him, right up to the melancholy ending.

Great insight

A real insight into life in the nfl and the ongoing struggle of players even when they make it. If you want a fairy tail Disney story don’t read. If you want to hear about true toughness and heart then give this a go
