About this listen
A duel. An ultimatum. An arranged marriage.
England, 1777
Will, Viscount Wingrave, whiles away his time gambling and bedding married women, thwarted in his wish to serve his country by his controlling father.
News that his errant son has fought a duel with a jealous husband is the last straw for the Earl of Marstone. He decrees that Will must marry. The earl's eye lights upon Connie Charters, unpaid housekeeper and drudge for a poor but socially ambitious father who cares only for the advantage her marriage could bring him.
Will and Connie meet for the first time at the altar. But Connie wants a husband who will love and respect her, not a womanizer and a gambler.
Their new home, on the wild coast of Devonshire, conceals dangerous secrets that threaten them and the nation. Can Will and Connie overcome the forces against them and forge a happy life together?

The Synopsis Is Very Misleading!
You’re given to believe that the title and the “blurb” mean that the “antagonism” is between the husband and wife, who did not choose each other and were coerced into marriage. It is not!
This is my 2nd novel by this author, but it won’t be my last. Jayne Davis writes very interesting Regency novels which are more than just Romances. The journey to the “Happy Ever After” is very realistically interesting, one gets to understand the machinations of being both “Lord of the Manor” and the dependent tenants, businesses and villagers. Also the staff taking care of the household. Very interesting.
I’m not sure if it’s a spoiler to give the story outline, so I won’t. Suffice to say, the Gander wins! It’s a beautiful story, well told and beautifully narrated.

An absolute gem
what an absolute delight. As a life long Georgette Heyer fan it was so wonderful to find this author. A good exciting story with lots going on and managing to portray the love and passion without having to resort to tasteless sex. Beautifully narrated. Thank you.

Charming and great plot ...
this is a charming book with a GREAT TWIST ... and fun to listen to!
I very much enjoyed the story - as well as the the performance .... as we all know that the permanence of the reader either lures us into a great story or can destroy a great story...
#Jayne Davis wrote a Brilliant Book with a great twist and #Esther Wane brought the story to live .... WELL DONE BOTH!!!

Excellent
Interesting, well written story very well performed. It captures the period and my native Devon delightfully. There are a few errors such as fishermen able to read and assess calculations.
