Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

From one of Britain’s most popular and prolific comedians comes a hilarious and deeply moving memoir of life lived under the rule of a Silverback dad.

The Silverback is considered the undisputed king, a creature whose authority is never challenged and who does not yield to compromise. He walks proudly, feeds greedily, grafts tirelessly, mates voraciously, swears constantly and is threatened all too easily. The Silverback is known to nestle in the misty peaks of central Africa but can also be found in Barking, Essex. Meet Dave Kane, the disappointed, steroid-ingesting, metal-wielding, bouncer father of slight, effete Gamma Male Russell Kane.

This is a story about fathers and sons, class and education and how one scrawny, sensitive, fake-tan-applying 'ponce' stepped out of his father's shadow and became a man - whatever that means.

Absolutely brilliant!

Found this hard to complete in stages, wanted to keep going until the end! Captivating, enthralling, amusing, interesting, open and honest. Loved it :-D

Brave, touching and funny

I really enjoyed this and highly recommend it providing you’re not prudish about full English swearing (which I’m not obv).

F***ing Brilliant Son

If you like laughing then this book is for you. Being from Essex there were so many relatable characters and phrases that I found myself bouncing between nostalgia and guts of giggles through the whole book.
Well done Russell... you did us proud

Tragic and hilarious at once

Never seen Russell Kane in stand up but have seen him on various shows.

Wasn't sure what to make of the book before buying it as he is quite (how shall I put it) exuberant (read annoying) but have a secret desire to find out what makes someone who they are

Initial perception was quietly sad and thought I wouldn't finish the book

But the more I listened, the more I got to learn about someone who grew from a shadow (probably classified as abused these days) to a successful comedian and author

His narration is brilliant, but I didn't expect anything else to be honest, and the excellent impressions immediately draw you in to the intended character

Great story of a passage to rite, excellently read, and I now absolutely must see him live.....when we are allowed!

From another SoaS

Whilst not having (quite) so much of a silverback for a father, I wasn’t far behind and my own life journey was very much similar to the author’s, even down to living and growing up within 5 miles of the book’s setting (albeit 15 years earlier).

I really felt the book benefited from being narrated by the author, who could do justice to not only the accent, but the tone, culture and area.

Be prepared for a very considerable amount of (top grade) swearing, (pretty much solely quoting the silverback), but personally I didn’t find this gratuitous in any way, just a representation of the person and time.

As stated, this probably resonated more with me than others, but the book was a great read, very funny and with a fantastic story of redemption in the end (sorry a bit of a spoiler).

As you may have guessed,I heartily recommend the book.

If you can get on with the writing of Danny Baker or the stand-up of Micky Flanagan, you will surely enjoy this book.
