Summary

Ron Fawcett is a natural-born climber. In 1969, while still at school in his native Yorkshire, he tied into a climbing rope for the first time and was instantly hooked. From that moment on, it seemed nothing else in his life mattered nearly as much as his next vertical fix. Ten years later, Fawcett was the most famous rock climber in Britain and among the best in the world, part of a new wave whose dedication to training transformed the sport, pushing standards further and faster than ever before - or since. His legacy of new climbs ranks him alongside the very best in the history of the sport. He was also the first to style himself a professional rock climber, starring in the landmark television documentary Rock Athlete, and appearing on the covers of magazines around the world. But far from enjoying the fame, Fawcett found the pressures of the limelight too much to bear, and at the end of the 1980s he faded from view. Now, for the first time, he tells his extraordinary story, of how his love of nature and the outdoors developed into a passion for climbing that took him to the top - and almost consumed him. Winner of the 2010 Boardman Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature.

An honest inspiring insight into a climbing legend

A superb telling of this inspiring story. As the story unfolds we get a glimpse into what an amazing world class climber Ron Fawcett was. But the strength of this book, and clearly why it won the coveted Boardman Tasker award is the honesty Ron pours out when he talks about the toll that climbing took on his personal life, his struggles with trying to make a living out of being one of the world's greatest ever climbers, and the dark times as he adjusted to no longer being a top climber, saved though by raising his family. There are some lovely written images in the latter part of the book as he races down from the crag to just about make it to the school gate for pickup.

Psyched me up to a whole new level!

Loved the story, the narration all of it!

Being in lock down is quite tough for some to always find that motivation to train and practise whether you're a climber at heart or any kinda sports fanatic.

I was hooked to this story all day, while on the home board, knocking out pull ups, out walking and before bed.. I just had to know more!

Will be referring back to Ron's story again even though I've finished it now, when I wanna hear some interesting anecode, funny situation or need a bit of psyching up. Found so many of Rons routes I want to try when we're out of lock down!

Thank you Ron for sharing your story, you will always be remembered.
