Summary
Roger Daltrey is the voice of a generation.
That generation was the first to rebel, to step out of the shadows of the Second World War...to invent the concept of the teenager.
This is his story, from his birth at the height of the Blitz through tempestuous school days to his expulsion, age 15, for a crime he did not commit (though he was guilty of many other misdemeanours he'd got away with). Thanks to Mr Kibblewhite, his draconian headmaster, it could all have ended there. The life of a factory worker beckoned.
But then came rock and roll. He made his first guitar from factory off-cuts. He formed a band. The band became The Who - Maximum R&B - and, by luck and by sheer bloody-mindedness, Roger Daltrey became the front man of one of the biggest rock bands on the planet.
This is the story of My Generation, Tommy and Quadrophenia, of smashed guitars, exploding drums, cars in swimming pools, fights, arrests and redecorated hotel rooms.
But it is also the story of how that postwar generation redefined the rules of youth. Out of that, the modern music industry was born - and it wasn't an easy birth. Money, drugs and youthful exuberance were a dangerous mix. This is as much a story of survival as it is of success.
Four years in the making, this is the first time Roger Daltrey has told his story. It is not just his own hilarious and frank account of more than 50 wild years on the road. It is the definitive story of The Who and of the sweeping revolution that was British rock 'n' roll.

Excellent
Fantastic listening to Rodger. He tells the story no airs or graces. Highly enjoyable.
You won't be disappointed. I even downloaded some of there songs.

A fantastic book
A fantastic book with excellent insights, I really knew nothing of the Who apart from some of their famous songs but Roger tells this story from the beginning to the end with passion, explaining things throughout the bands starting point, exploits and funny beginnings.

His Generation
I loved this book. It was touching at times, but it also made me laugh. It was written with clarity and delivered with great gusto by Roger Daltrey.
But if you're hoping for more details about the music and the source of The Who's songs, then buy Pete Townshend's book. To be fair to Roger, Pete wrote nearly all of The Who's songs so you can't expect Roger to provide too much detail about that. What shocked me though is how Roger has managed to get through most of his life with The Who relatively unscathed. The other band members -- Townshend, Entwistle and Moon -- all had their demons and revelled in the sex, drugs and rock n roll lifestyle...Roger managed to avoid the drugs! To his credit, he decided his voice was more important than a temporary high.
I'll miss Roger's instantly recognisable voice on my daily run around my local park. He's lived a full and exciting life and all that goes with it. His book is well worth a listen.

Fascinating insight
Really enjoyed this. Roger does a great job of narrating, sounding a lot like a mate chatting away over a pint. Amazing insight into the many ups and downs of his life. Being a Rock God isn't as straightforward, easy and financially rewarding as you might think! He comes across as a really likeable and surprisingly simple man. I guess he was and always will be a working class Londoner.

A great story!
I loved this book. And I was genuinely sad when it ended.
A story of determination and hard work filled with pathos and humour.

Great anecdotes
Loved this, had already read the book but the narration really brought it to life. Roger's laughter and joy at remembering the high points in a long career was brilliant to hear. A must for fans of the rock biography.

Very enjoyable!
I was always an on/off fan of The Who, probably until the mid 70s when their music was getting a bit too loud for me. An age thing probably! But they were always an exciting and destructive band so I thought it would be good to try and find out what made them tick. I found "Thanks a Lot Mr Kibblwhite" a very compelling story, extremley well read by the author and lead singer of the band, Roger Daltrey himself, which made it all the better.
