About this listen

Rumor has it; they are being moved to Warsaw. Heide, who is always informed, claims that all hell is loose over there. There is talk of a German pullback from the eastern frontline. Thousands of British paratroops have landed and Polish soldiers converge on from the woods. But the Polish army is already doomed. Not only by the Reichsführer Himmler in Berlin, but also by Marshal Stalin. The Polish nationalists vainly beg the Red Army for help. But it has already been decided that the Polish communists are to take over Poland.

"WITH THIS BRILLIANTLY REALISTIC DRAMA, HASSEL UNCOVERS THE UPRISING OF THE POLISH HOME ARMY" NOUVELLES LITTÉRAIRES, France

Sven Hassel was sent to a penal battalion as a private in the German forces. Intensely and with brutal realism, he portrays the cruelty of the war, the Nazi crimes and the crude and cynical humor of the soldiers. With more than 50 million sold copies, this is one of the world’s best selling war novels. rn

A Good Listen

Really good listen but I thought the narrator should have been better at accents ie German, as some of the characters sounded more like cornish than german

Reign of hell

It’s my first audiobook and I had read the book some years ago. I was impressed with the story and I’ll be looking forward to the next one.

Pronouncing certain words

I like the story, loved to read all of Sven Hassels novels as a teenager, but it’s annoying and frustrating when certain words are spoken from what I am used to. Main one being Obrst which is pronounced Uburst. Also the letter V is pronounce as W.
Then Tiny has a Norfolk accent which is a minor annoyance.
Also the places are spoken differently from what I am used to. That’s why I gave a performance of a 4, I don’t think most people will notice and enjoy the books

Like very much

I thought it was right up there with some of the best of Sven Hassel"s books. You will like this I really did.

Brutal but Brilliant

As with the previous titles, this one is War at its most brutal. The Gang is all here Sven, Hiede, Tiny, Porta, Barcelona, Gregor and of course the Old Man. This time it is the polish uprising of 1944. Unputdownable as is all this Authors Novels. There is everything here. 5*****

Thrilling but haunting.

The at times chilling story, realistic and rough but exciting to hear. Characters you both like, yet thoroughly dislike, and you can’t help but picking favorites.
Some of the darker parts of the story is only made darker by it not necessarily being unrealistic, from a historic point of view.

Good enough, but not his best.

The third book read on the trot by the newly discovered (by me) author.

Not as highly rated in comparison to the previous two works, this one has a distinct meandering feel to it.

Part of the issue may have been the narration, the narrator using English regional accents to differentiate the characters, which in my opinion doesn’t work in a novel depicting German soldiers.

Not Hassel’s best, but still worth a read.

Ridiculous accents spoil it

The accents spoiled the whole book. West Country medieval peasant accents instead of German. What was this narrator thinking of!! I can’t finish it
