About this listen

The long-awaited sequel to Jasper Fforde's cult bestseller Shades of Grey, set in world where social hierarchy revolves entirely around visual colour.

Imagine a world where your position in society depended on what bit of the colour spectrum you could see. This is the world inhabited by Eddie Russett (red, middle-level) and Jane Grey (monochromatic, lowest in society). Eddie and Jane must negotiate the delicate Chromatic politics of society to find out what the 'Something that Happened' actually was, how society got to be this way, and crucially, is there Somewhere Else beyond their borders - and if there is, could there be Someone Else, too, someone whose unseen hand has been guiding the fortunes and misfortunes of the nation for the past 500 years?

It's a tale of a young couple's thirst for justice and answers in an implacably rigid society, where the prisoners are also the guards, and cages of convention bind the citizens to only one way of thinking - or suffer the consequences....

Everything I waited far far far to long for

Fforde did not disappoint (other than the very long wait!). Arguable better than Shades of Grey, and a great broadening of the world he has created.

Wonderful!

It was beautifully read and I really loved the story. One of my favourite authors and I highly recommend a listen

A rather dark story

Obviously this would not make sense if I hadn’t read Shades of Grey which I thoroughly enjoyed. Although a follow up to the original, the tone is quite different and a ‘darkening’ theme. It is certainly very thoughtful and I shall probably listen to it again sometime. I liked the comments by Ted Grey , 20 years in Chromacia(!!!) at the beginning of the chapters. Very well read. I liked the ending and left me wanting to know more.

Fantastic performance

The second book delivers on the premise set up by the first one. The narration is excellent, probably in my top 5 of audiobooks.

Immersive & good characters

Great sequel. Well thought through alternative world. Good mix of explanation & showing through action makes a believable reality. Slightly preferred narrator of Red Side Story for characters’ voices, but good nevertheless. Hope it’s not too long til the next in the series which will hopefully explain all.

Fantastic stuff

Really enjoyed this - I’d kind of forgotten the 1st one, it’s was so long ago I read it, but this carries on and completes the story beautifully. Funny, interesting and touching, Fforde’s world-building is wonderful. Feels a bit like 1984 written by Magnus Mills. Only slight gripe was that, whereas it does have a good, proper ending, it felt a bit rushed and I was left wanting to know more about what we started to learn.

Still great. More!

Jasper Fforde does it again. Love this series, I do feel it could have been much bigger if he had picked any other title for the first volume, it just got squashed out of existence when fifty shades of grey turned up just after it was released. I’ll be honest and admit I wasn’t entirely sure at the end of the first book if he actually knew where it was going or if he was just making up cool stuff as he went along but it seems Jasper had a plan all along.
I think maybe this lacks some of the lightweight quirky charm of the first title in this series, but then perhaps that’s just a second-book-in-a-series thing and to be expected. There’s more pacing to this one and it’s got a sense of drive and direction now, so I guess it’s impossible to do both. Either way keep them coming please! I’m assuming there’s going to be at least one more? There had better be or I’m going to have to camp outside his house or something.
Nicely read as well, kudos to the narrator. Clear and defined characterisation, nicely paced, superb effort all round.

Worth the Wait

The longest I have waited for a sequel. Fourteen years is a very long time, but Red Side Story was worth the wait.

FForde is a master and this series of books is truly masterful, unique, and increasingly enjoyable.

excellent second part

Great story, humorous but gripping too. Please please don't leave writing the 3rd part of the series for so long

worth the wait

All round perfection, a worthy sequel to Shades of Grey and worth waiting more than a decade for. Brilliant ideas and world making, a genius premise and satisfying explanations of the weirder elements of Shades, while raising new questions which hopefully will be answered in the third volume of this trilogy, but don't make us wait so long this time! overall a brilliant and moving dystopian story with many inventive genius ideas and a healthy underpinning of humour.
