Summary
Violet Jacobs is fearless. At least, that's what the cowboys she snatches from under the hooves of bucking horses think. Outside the ring, she's got plenty of worries rattling her bones: her young son, her mess of a love life, and lately, her family's struggling rodeo. When she takes business into her own hands and hires on a hotshot bullfighter, she expects to start a ruckus.
She never expected Joe Cassidy.
Joe came to Texas to escape a life spiraling out of control. He never planned on sticking around, and he certainly never expected to call this dry and dusty backwater home. But Violet is everything he never knew he was missing, and the deeper he's pulled into her beautiful mess of a family, the more he realizes this fierce rodeo girl may be offering him the one thing he never could find on his own. Contains mature themes.

My first Rodeo? Not even close
If you don't have more than a passing interest in rodeo, find another book. This writer has in depth knowledge of the rodeo life and entwines this romance around it in gritty detail.
Being the first in this series, the book sets out the family dynamic and familiarizes us with the cast of characters we are going to meet in this tale and the following ones. These are people you come to like and enjoy. There are no baddies deliberately creating silly shenanigans and pointless dramas to fill up the pages. There is humour aplenty, and good witty dialogue.
Violet is a strong capable woman, proud to known as a "pick up man". Joe is rough on the outside, but craving affection and to belong inside. I felt their spark.
I love horses and rodeo, and have in depth knowledge too, so found this book ticked all my boxes, as well as giving a fully fledged satisfying romance, well crafted and paced. It is refreshing that the MCs don't rip each other's clothes off and have insta-love in Chapter 1 although there is a strong initial attraction. Instead, like in real life, the relationship builds, till the tension takes the passion where it must go right into the Epilogue. The sex is delicately handled with no gynaecological detail. There is also very little bad language.
The narration with the "Texas" accent is a little hard to take at the beginning, but each character has a distinct voice and after a while you don't notice how grating the voice is. What is hard, is that it's the same narrator for the whole series! I don't feel the accent added anything to the story.
There are aspects of this relationship not covered in this book, but drip-fed throughout the following books.
I enjoyed this audiobook, but will get the others on Kindle to avoid this narrator.

A Feisty Female Lead Character - A Very Welcome Change In ‘Cowboy Country’ Fiction!
Both the female and male ‘lead’ characters were very well depicted - and their respective ‘stories’ drew me in and kept my interest, throughout. The wider ‘cast of characters were, also, intriguing, enabling me to ‘experience’ the fictionalised context of their world more readily through their various roles within ‘the family’, the ‘Rodeo’ setting and as friends.
I did, as a committed ‘animal lover’ find some of the descriptions of ‘Rodeo’ activities tough to hear - caught myself ‘grimacing’ during several especially ‘ramped-up’ passages describing the ‘roping techniques’ and severe use of spurs on both horses and bulls! I wanted to listen to this novel ( read incredibly well, BTW, by the narrator) in the hope of understanding more about Western ‘Rodeos’ - but, despite this excellent storyline, I remained appalled at the ‘normalising’ and acceptance of the casual cruelty inflicted on live animals during such rodeos - for the entertainment of the crowds who attend…!
Of course, this is a fictionalised account - but the title ‘blurb’ states that the author is very familiar with the world of ‘Rodeo’, so I believed her descriptions of such activities to be accurate - despite any ‘enhancements’ she might have added for ‘dramatic effect!’
A good read, in any case.
