About this listen

The attacks of September 11, 2001, prompted the creation of a robust and deadly special operations force—Task Force Dagger. Alan C. Mack, Callsign Razor 03, led a team of MH-47E helicopters and armed MH-60s. Their two-fold mission–Personnel Recovery (PR) and Unconventional Warfare (UW) involved flying in terrain and weather previously not thought possible. If that wasn’t enough, they pushed the flight envelope of their specially modified Chinooks to the limit and beyond.

Mack shares his behind-the-scenes perspective of the Horse Soldier’s infill into Afghanistan. He discusses the hunt for Osama Bin Laden at Tora Bora and describes his shootdown during Operation Anaconda. Years later, he chased Bowe Bergdahl, rescued hostages in Iraq, and the U.S. Navy Seal "Lone Survivor" from the Kunar Valley.

Mack’s near-death experiences and frequent deployments not only affected him, but pushed his wife toward prescription opioids. Her developing addiction led to friction as he kept her secret and continued to deploy.

He lived by his unit’s motto, "Night Stalkers Don’t Quit!" He wouldn’t quit on his unit–he couldn’t quit on his family. His story of success, tragedy, and ultimate happiness is as old as warfare itself.

Simply wow

Taking you to the heart of the action but with an overlay of the realities that you leave behind when operating overseas, and the constant anchor they can sometimes be. Incredible book. Incredible story, Incredible man.

Great insight into a nightstalker pilot

Brilliant book and well read. Truly inspiring how he dealt with being a SF pilot whilst all the troubles at home.

Violent

He played down the domestic abuse. Only time he’s on the phone to his son he happens to find his wife dead full of bruises. If he was not military I think he would have been questioned over her suspicious death . And finally 12 month after his wife’s death he’s with another woman and been dating previous to that. His wife’s death must have really upset him.

Author narrated adds authenticity.

This was an excellent listen. The fact that it was read out by the author made it much more authentic. From the correct pronunciation of Military terminology and abbreviations, to the re-creation of radio transmissions. The author an narrator, Allan Mack, puts on accents where appropriate which adds character to the text.
Refreshingly, Allan Mack highlights the impact the constant cycle of operational deployments have on service families and particularly on his relationship with his first wife, who was dealing with her own ‘demons’. Her downward spiral and how he dealt with it added so much more to this book.
I would highly recommend this book.

Enthralling

A warts and all retelling of a Warriors journey. Not only a thrilling, riveting ride on deployments but an expose on the harsh realities of how the war on terror affects family life for service families. Well narrated by the author.

A interesting listen

Alan has told his life story and it's been very interesting to hear. There are some elements I'd heard before too.
