Summary

Winner of the Booker Prize 2023 On a dark, wet evening in Dublin, scientist and mother of four Eilish Stack answers her front door to find the GNSB on her step. Two officers from Ireland’s newly formed secret police are here to interrogate her husband, a trade unionist. Ireland is falling apart. The country is in the grip of a government turning towards tyranny and when her husband disappears, Eilish finds herself caught within the nightmare logic of a society that is quickly unravelling. How far will she go to save her family? And what – or who – is she willing to leave behind? Exhilarating, terrifying and propulsive, Prophet Song is a work of breathtaking originality, offering a devastating vision of a country at war and a deeply human portrait of a mother’s fight to hold her family together.

Critic reviews

'The comparisons are inevitable – Saramago, Orwell, McCarthy – but this novel will stand entirely on its own.' (Colum McCann, author of Apeirogon)

'Monumental ... You remember why fiction matters. It's hard to recall a more powerful novel in recent years.' (Samantha Harvey, author of The Western Wind)

'Prophet Song is a literary manifesto for empathy for those in need and a brilliant, haunting novel that should be placed into the hands of policymakers everywhere.' (The Guardian)

Unrelenting brilliant misery

Beautiful writing, beautiful reading. It forced me to face so many sad and terrifying things, and the setting gave it an unwelcome familiarity. I wanted to stop listening but I couldn’t. It ended and I feel devastated, and in need of something light to help me face the rest of my day.

Excellent

A gripping and powerful read, especially given the world of today. I am struck by the impact of its simplicity

The obliteration of a nation of childhood, of family life by I'll gotten nationalism

This focussed on the darkness experienced by one family following a National takeover. Indeed it paints vividly the experience of all who experience a tortured life due to forces outside themselves. It compells the reader to enter into that world. The language and rhythm is indeed that of a Prophet, a Prophet of Doom.

A must read

Urgent. Powerful. Tragic. A wake up call for this century as politics drifts dangerously to the right. A new dystopian classic.

Beautifully written

This was a difficult story to hear but the writing was brilliant. The narrator’s soothing tone complements the writing beautifully. My heart ached for Eilish over and over as she did everything she could to protect her family and keep herself going while the world around her grew ever darker. A stark reminder of the reality for refugees and those living in war torn countries.

Such a well written and terrifying book , So well read .

The hopelessness of a dreadful situation slipped into so easily. People with everything taken away from them. When set in a country so familiar we begin to comprehend more clearly the agony of some many refugees who seek a safety . Not an easy read but it should be heard . Perhaps as a prophecy of our futures!

The most powerful book I’ve read

Such a powerful read that will stay with me for a while; a mix of heartache & terror, teamed with such an ominous feeling throughout. The narrator did a fantastic job

Why would you want to read something as depressing as this…
In the end of the story is stupid
