FROM THE SUNDAY TIMES NUMBER ONE BESTSELLING AUTHOR

Summer 1914. A world on the brink of catastrophe.

In London, 26-year-old Venetia Stanley – aristocratic, clever, bored, reckless – is having a love affair with the Prime Minister, H. H. Asquith, a man more than twice her age. He writes to her obsessively, sharing the most sensitive matters of state.

As Asquith reluctantly leads the country into war with Germany, a young intelligence officer is assigned to investigate a leak of top secret documents – and suddenly what was a sexual intrigue becomes a matter of national security that will alter the course of political history.

Seamlessly weaving fact and fiction in a way that no writer does better, Precipice is the thrilling new novel from Robert Harris.

‘A riveting tale of politics, war and erotic obsession’ Sunday Times

'Harris writes with a skill and ingenuity that few other novelists can match' Financial Times

Brilliant- all of the production

Robert Harris's writing is always a delight- even when tackling difficult and complex situations. This one is a fascinating insight into the lead up to the First World War and the dying days of the Edwardian era of rank and privilege- not that much has changed on that front. A glimpse into a hugely significant relationship - again showing that hypocrisy and self service amongst the so called upper echelons of society still runs true - in a hugely significant period of history, absolutely fascinating. Beautifully read by Samuel West - a master of the craft. Worth every penny !

Well narrated.

Too many different characters, hard to keep track of who was who. Not my favourite book.

Riveting true story… very much enjoyed

I very much like hearing the letters that were genuinely written by Asquith at a very important moment in world history

Vividly evocative with a great plot

I absolutely love this book. It’s a great yarn wrapped into a warm hug from a past era. The narration is exquisite. It literally transports me back to my grandparents house in London; they would have been born at the same time as Venetia, although poor. The author conjures the past so clearly, you feel you are there. I’m going to listen to it again on holiday

A completely different perspective on the early early years of WWI

Well written as ever. Kept my attention throughout and gave me a very different perspective on the build up to war in 1914 and the early years of the war. Another great historic novel!

Absolutely fantastic

Another tour de force from Mr Harris. I knew basically nothing about the Asquith/Stanley affair, and this inspired me to look it up, the accuracy is amazing. It's sad, sweet, romantic, disturbing, and all of it against the background of bubbling international tensions then war. A masterpiece.
The reader has a very soothing and smooth voice, and is able to gently differentiate each character without harsh accents or silly voices. Excellent job.
