About this listen

Pretty, smart, and pampered, Audrey Marie Hilley grew up in a small Alabama town believing she was entitled to the best of everything. But marriage to her high school sweetheart, a cushy secretarial job, and motherhood were not enough to satisfy Marie, and she soon began to act out in troubling ways. Only when her husband, Frank, became sick with a mysterious illness, did it seem that she was ready to put someone else's needs ahead of her own. The truth was far more disturbing.

Four years after Frank died, Marie's daughter, Carol, began to experience debilitating stomach pains. The young woman was near death when the horrifying reality finally emerged: Marie had poisoned her husband with arsenic and was attempting to do the same to her daughter. It was the first in a series of shocking twists that exposed Marie Hilley as a cold-blooded chameleon capable of the most sinister of crimes. From Alabama to Florida to New Hampshire, her trail of death and deceit included multiple identities, a second marriage, a false kidnapping, a fake death, several dramatic escapes, and a final act of desperation that brought the whole sordid saga to an astonishing end.

Captivating

Very good listen!

Not a story I was aware of but was well written, and I didn't want to stop listening.

Too long and drawn-out but still fascinating

Although the writing is too long and drawn-out it is an incredibly well researched piece of detective work on behalf of the author. He has really expanded on the known facts of the case. However, even with the author’s lack of brevity, it’s a really fascinating and tragic story. She was a scary lady to be a friend or associate of!

Good book

Like another review here, it has slow bits talking about family history which is no relevance to the story. But once you persevere it is a gripping story which can astound you with bear faced cheek of Marie.

Astonishing story, laughable narration

I’ve actually already read this book at least 2 or 3 times and found it so fascinating that I was very happy to see the audiobook now included in the Audible library; I started listening straightaway. The story is as unbelievable as ever - the stuff this woman got up to was just incredible but I’m still equally baffled how so many people were taken in by her stories. The narration was generally fine but he does something that really irks me. When narrating the part of a woman, he feels the need to put on a totally unconvincing and frankly insulting high pitched voice. It sounds so ridiculous, it’s laughable. We are intelligent and capable enough to discern who you’re taking about, you don’t need to put on the voice to highlight it! I sound like a strident feminist now, I’m not and I’m a man, it’s just something I come across frequently in audiobooks and it’s awful.

tooooo long!!

This looked like a good story and was looking forward to listening to it.
As it happened I gave up halfway through!! To descriptive with unwanted details. IE:1 hr and a half detailing a victim!!
Also, the narrators voice when imitating a women made it seem like a kids bedtime story.

Far, far too long!

This is an incredible and gripping true crime story that I had previously been totally unaware of. The problem was the length which was ridiculous. The author goes into such minute detail it literally clogged up my brain. The epilogue’ alone lasts a full hour - possibly a record?

Good!

This is a surprisingly good listen! I’ve just realised I still have 16 hours of listening left which took me by surprise, but it’s an interesting story and I like the narration so I’ll be happy to continue it on my travels.

Mind blowing true life scheming

Wow. I
One of the best true crime books I've ever listened to.
If you didn't know it was true you'd think it was some sort of farce, the mind boggles.
This woman was truly bonkers.
Really entertaining, kept me guessing and left me with my mouth open in disbelief!
