About this listen

Exclusively from Audible

In the fourth of the Palliser stories, Trollope follows Phineas Finn's return to the dangerous world of Westminster politics after the death of his wife, Mary.

His career takes a turn for the worse when his political rival is murdered. With all the circumstantial evidence pointing at Phineas, he is thrown under suspicion and eventually finds himself standing trial at the Old Bailey. The situation is complicated by the presence of two women in his life: his old flame Lady Laura, whose estranged husband is determined to destroy Phineas' reputation, and the wealthy and enigmatic widow, Madame Max.

Trollope's ideas of political rivalries, bribery, injunctions, romantic entanglements and a scandal-mongering popular press seem as relevant today as they were in the 1870s. A story full of drama that echoes our modern day political world.

Trollope's work is regarded by some as among the greatest of 19th-century fiction and with his powerful political storytelling it's unsurprising that fans of Trollope's work have included former British Prime Ministers Harold Macmillan and Sir John Major.

Wonderful narration

As with all the Trollope novels that Timothy West has recorded for Audible the narration here is sublime. I could listen to him reading forever. Every nuance in the book is brought out, and his characterisation is perfect.

Beware Trollope is an addiction !

Wonderfully read one of so many Trollope masterpieces gently meanders through politics , love and murder and always with a butler or Duke in the background .

Trollope and West

This is a match made in heaven great writing and brilliant performance. The only thing to spoil the tape was a faint echo of the reading which was very annoying and which I reported on another tape as well.

Tim West: Tour de force

When trying to convey the extent of the play of characters in a novel of this complexity and subtlety one needs an actor of enormous skill and genius to pull it off. Here we have such a star, as Tim West, who has read the whole of Trollope’s Barchester novels and of course the Political novels. Phineas Finn is a wonderful story that goes up hill and down dale taking in a huge stable of personalities. I love this work as I do all of Trollope’s works. Without dear Tim West we would be bereft of the subtleties of Trollope’s writing. I recommend this recording whole heartedly.

Excellent performance of excellent story

Although the political thread I lost sometimes, as always the exellent performance of Timothy West kept me interested and once again, I thoroughly enjoyed this Trollope.
