A wonderful discovery
I came upon this book by chance of a review on audible of nest of vipers by Francois Mauriac(also strongly recommended)as I think it is still little known in England.
I am very grateful to the reviewer as Pereira is one of the most wonderful books I have ever read. At the end of the recording there is an introduction by Moshin Hamid to which I can add little.
Read now and spread the word. The enjoyment was of course considerably enhanced by the bewitching reading of Derek Jacobi.

A slow burn ...
Well-written and well-read. The kind of book you may remember with a sense of fondness. Not a book where you'll find much in the way of action or dramatic moments of epiphany, however, rather a slow recalibration of one's man's view on life, leading to a final defiant gesture. Memorable in a quiet, gentle way.
