About this listen

Penny Pollard hates old people, Annette Smurton (who has her own horse) wearing dresses, and doing homework. On a school excursion she meets someone just as rebellious as herself - Mrs Edith Bettany - (nearly) 81-years-old and a new friend for Penny. This is Penny's diary.©1983 Robin Klein (P)2000 Bolinda Publishing Humorous Fiction

Editor reviews

Penny's an irascible young girl who thinks old people are boring and the idea of being seen in a pretty pink dress is gross. But through her diary we see her open up to Mrs. Bettany a lonely widow who lives at a nursing home. The two find each other kindred spirits, talking about their lives and love of horses. Rebecca Macauley has a lot of fun performing this audiobook speeding along like a highly opinionated young girl excitedly making new discoveries, and also voicing the earnest, steadfast Mrs. Bettany with calm serenity. There's a lot of humor and a lot of heart here that will delight listeners, young and old.

Critic reviews

"Rebecca Macauley excels at portraying youngsters of both sexes and the elderly astonishingly well. She presents Penny's diary entries with just the right verve." (AudioFile Magazine)
