Summary
Was it an earthquake? A meteor? Or something else entirely?
Running from a marriage proposal in Seattle, Dana Ingram returns to her parents' farm in Western Colorado for a two-week vacation in Paradox Valley. Only a couple of days into it, however, a small earthquake leaves them without power. Cars won't start, batteries don't work, and cell phones are useless.
When a Black Hawk helicopter vanishes off of radar, Captain Corey Conaway is sent in to locate it and its crew - all while keeping the disappearance out of the media. When she meets Dana and her cousin, Butch, Corey solicits their help in the search. But as they travel on horseback through the rugged and remote Paradox Valley, what they stumble upon soon has them running for their lives.

tense
though not original, this is a really good listen, plenty of suspense as a small community suffers what they assume was an earthquake, but nothing with a battery works after the electricity goes in thier area. A lone army officer arrives and the scene is set for shocks, action, distrust, grief, and romance,
Well written with a flowing realism that keeps you from putting it down, and of course the narration is excellent.
a definite read again, and hopefully a book 2

50s sci-fi in a modern verse
The story is a litttle thin and never quite makes it to the "paranoia" levels, one of the main protagonists was just a bit too whiney (for me at least), the voice actress had an oddly Shatter'esq way of speaking that sometimes made words sound like whole sentences...outside of doing the main character voices which were very well done that I found a smidge jarring, and the military decisions in this book are kinda... Hmm... Yeaaa...
That said, as always with Gerri Hills books, the characterisation is done very well (even if you don't like them), the description of the environment ts are flawless. You can certainly see where this book was aiming for and I think with a little more time it would have hit the mark, but by the end it never quite gets there. Still it's OK, and if you likes the old 50s style B movies this will be a nice trip down memory lane for you

Not typical lesfic story
The story is primarily a suspense thriller with the main characters being lesbian, and where the they fall in love. There is no sex in the story, that's fine. It's well written and an interesting story. However, I felt it sat a bit between the genres and this confused me as a listener, not sure exactly what to expect. It felt like an adventure romance, but then had dark horror elements of aliens taking over dead bodies, which I wasn't quite ready for. I recommend it, but feel it's better to view it as thriller/horror then a romance or lesfic.

Exciting Horror/Romance
This is an excellent horror/sci fi romance. On the face of it a rather strange combination but it actually works really well. The suspense and tension while listening was palpable.
No spoilers here. My only gripe is that it took me a long time to get used to the narrator, the deep voices she used for the male characters reminded me of Grandpa Pig from Peppa Pig - sorry ! But I did get used to it, I had just listened to a female narrator on Lisey’s Story who just used slight inflections to signify a male character and it was much more effective. But on the plus side the narrator conveyed the horror of the situation really well, and the unfolding subtlety told love story.
