About this listen

Libraries are meant for studying - not sex.

College sophomore Ethan Follett never says what's on his mind and never wants to rock the boat. After a high school social life spent anonymous and alone, things are finally falling into place for him. He's found a group of friends just as studious as he and is on track for a promising legal career. Out in the open, things couldn't be better, but secretly Ethan yearns for some real excitement in his life.

He finds it in cocky frat boy Greg Sanderson, who challenges every rigid, preconceived notion Ethan lives by. Soon, their sparring relationship turns sexual, and these enemies-with-benefits "get their freak on" all over campus. Yet the more Ethan comes out of his shell, the more Greg retreats into his, working overtime to keep his ladies' man public persona intact. As the sex gets hotter, and they get closer to getting caught, one part of their arrangement can't stay hidden any longer: love.

Contains mature themes.

Not my jam

This story is not usually what I go for: nerd &fret boy and after listening to this one I am confirmed in my believes. This is not my jam. Terms used for some people no, just no. The one plus is the realization in the storyline that a lot of the people are not who they portray to be and are just as insecure or finding themselves out. Beside one or two a**holes.

I have a problem with the the 'relation' development between the mc's.
It feels like Ethan is used for being gay, and yes he follows his hormons, and hopes more will develop. I feel he succums to peer pressure from Greg to drink more to belong to a different group when je feels left out and lonely. He has a past of not having friends in high school so wants to connect with new people.
In the end he drinks less and is honest to his new and 'old' friends.
Greg was finding his way to being who he truely wants and dares to be. I however find it strange that almost all their encounters of the spicy sort where out in the open when he did not want to be caught or did he want to? His behqviour especially early on where downright deregotory. I also felt he did not respect Ethan his boundaries in several of the scenes. 3-/3*

Audiobook:
The narrator is overall good. I have listened to many a book he narrated, However he needs to work on his female voices; I had flashbacks to a witch in a programm I saw as a child. 4*

Easy read

I’d listen to anything by this narrator. This story is a nice easy listen about awakening. Mild spice is nice.

Much better than expected

Really fun and interesting listen, brilliantly narrated, the reader really brought the characters to life for me
Treat yourself and have a listen to chapter one or two … and btw it’s not the script plot you might guess in advance
A lovely listen overall

Innocent yet smoking hot! I listened to it almost in one go as I couldn’t ’put it down’!

A favourite of mine

I actually come back to this book time and time again. I find it so cozy and fun, I love Ethan and Gregg and the narration was actually really satisfying to me. It’s a classic for me!

Decent new adult

Out in the Open was good, not my usual go to (new adult) but not something I avoid.

It was solid read/listen. Filled with some great characters and a fun story. Studious wanna be law student falls for a frisky frat bro.

I’m always happy to read anything by AJ Truman

The narration is about the only thing I can fault. The narrator (I’ve listened to no less than 4 of his audiobooks) is incapable of voicing women well. He makes then sound vapid and nasally.

College coming out story

Firstly- the narration was EXCELLENT. Easy to follow the different characters. It added the fun and sassy in all the right places

Gay guy meets straight(ish) boy, first the sex then the relationship, with lots of bumps in the road - as normal with a coming out story. Story was slow at times but with the narration it was a great listen overall

good character study

It was for free, so I started out reluctant, after shelving it 'not for me', years ago. This was a well done character study. A young man trying to fit in by altering his behavior, but always ignored and looked down on. His friend keeps his private life secret, only wants sex and ignores the boundaries Ethan has but shuts up about.
Not a fun love story, but great character development.

Cendese is a narrator I got used to, but his performance of female characters is very insulting.
