About this listen

The last man Judith Worth wants to see again is Christian Trent, the Marquess of Ashford - the man who spent summers at her family home, who kissed her one magical night...and then heartlessly ruined her father. But when a tricky business matter arises, he's the only one she can ask for help. With any luck, he'll engage a servant to take care of the matter, and she won't even have to talk with him.

But Ashford has never forgotten Judith. He knows she will never forgive him for what he's done, but when offered the chance to assist her, he arrives in person. His memory of Judith may have haunted him, but it pales in comparison to the reality of the vivacious, beautiful woman he rediscovers. Throughout his life, he has always done what is correct. But now, he finds himself doing something utterly wrong...falling in love with the one woman he can never have.

Enjoyable story, irritating plot

I don't know. I'm invested in the plot but just about every character deeply annoyed me. The writing was good and it was well narrated.

A disappointing beginning to this new series

Where does Once Upon a Marquess rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Reasonably high but only on account of Rosalyn Landor's performing of it.

If you’ve listened to books by Courtney Milan before, how does this one compare?

It does not rate highly compared to The Brothers Sinisters series

Which character – as performed by Rosalyn Landor – was your favourite?

Christian

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not really, mostly exasperation!

Any additional comments?

This book only dragged itself up to 4 stars because of Rosalyn Landor's fantastic narration. Because my life is so stressful right now, audio books are doing a good job in helping to keep me sane. The great narrators, such as: Rosalyn Landor, Kate Reading, Alex Wyndham and Nicholas Boulton press all of the right buttons for me. And this is one example where a wonderful narrator has saved an otherwise mediocre book. I honestly think that had I been reading this book in print I would have abandoned it. However, Ms. Landor kept me plodding on; it's sacrilege to give up on her!

Courtney Milan is a great writer - there is no doubt; and she tackles some very controversial subjects - in fact it's something I've always admired about her. Once Upon a Marquess is no exception; very deep and thought provoking in parts. Unfortunately, its moral message is almost lost amongst some of the trivial dialogue (I'm pretty sure it was meant to be amusing but I just felt irritated) so much so, that I almost missed the point. Not my favourite by this great author, but I won't give up on her yet; just a blip, I'm hoping - fingers crossed.

5* writing, 5* narration, 3* storyline/content and that only because the writing, as usual is excellent and the moral message is clever. As this is the first in a series, I'm hoping it improves.
