Summary

It's 2017, and Olga and her brother, Pedro 'Prieto' Acevedo, are bold-faced names in their hometown of New York. Prieto is a popular congressman representing their gentrifying, Latinx neighbourhood in Brooklyn, while Olga is the tony wedding planner for Manhattan's power brokers.

Despite their alluring public lives, behind closed doors things are far less rosy. Sure, Olga can orchestrate the love stories of the one per cent, but she can't seem to find her own...until she meets Matteo, who forces her to confront the effects of long-held family secrets.

Twenty-seven years ago, their mother, Blanca, a Young Lord-turned-radical, abandoned her children to advance a militant political cause, leaving them to be raised by their grandmother. Now, with the winds of hurricane season, Blanca has come barrelling back into their lives.

Set against the backdrop of New York City in the months surrounding the most devastating hurricane in Puerto Rico's history, Olga Dies Dreaming is a story that examines political corruption, familial strife and the very notion of the American dream—all while asking what it really means to weather a storm.

Beautiful

I loved everything about this book. The narration made it so much more evocative than just reading it. The book was beautifully written and so interesting. I feel privileged to be informed about a situation that I had so little idea existed. I can’t recommend this highly enough.

I loved this book that had me engaged from the get go. A big family saga set in the political context of Puerto Rican struggle. Narration is great with 2 different people.

insight into US puerto rican experience + history

the start was off putting to me but that belied the reat of the book where the characters develop with several story strands. Particularly interesting re tenaion between political and personal loyaltied and prejudices and puerto rican experience and history

Engaging narrator

I really enjoyed this story that had great narrators so it was easy to listen. Interesting characters and there was a lot of humour mixed in with a serious story about life, love and how history shapes us.

stunning book!

Absolutely loved the book and so glad I went for the audio version as I really feel it added to the story! So many issues packed into one book and it all comes together so beautifully.

Loved everything about this book

As an Italian woman living in Italy, I had never properly focused my attention on the political and human condition of the Puerto Rico People. Eye opening, beautifully written and read, I loved how the writer walks us through a few viewpoints of political activism. Will read anything Gonzales writes!

A five star read

This book is fantastic you can’t really put it into a genre but it’s very contemporary fiction about family, social mobility, politics, corruption and cultural belonging. A must read for all.
