About this listen
Raiden is the firstborn son and heir to the throne. When his father is injured, the weight of the crown is heavier than ever. At 17 years old, Raiden isn’t sure he can live up to the king’s legacy.
Egan is a dragon who appears human. He works for his family as a blacksmith. The secret he must protect keeps him from getting close to anyone.
After a chance encounter, Raiden discovers Egan’s secret. They form a friendship forged by trust, and it soon blossoms into something neither of them expected. The strength they find in each other may just help them rise up to meet their destinies.

First, I read the book, and then I listened to it.
Below is my original review of the book straight after reading it. Even though it's a YA book, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Then I listened to the audio version, and it came alive under the very talented Talia Carver. So what can I say apart from I then went on to listen to the following two books. Well worth the listen.
What a start to a YA series
I wasn't sure that this book would be for me, but I can't wait to start book two.
I loved the whole world-building and the characters. Raiden is a Prince and the main heir to the throne, and Egan is a local blacksmith apprentice who's actually a dragon. Egan's secret must be kept as Dragons are not known in this land.
The story develops well, and their friendship grows into a budding romance. There is no happy ending as such as the story continues into books 2 and 3.

very good
very good. action packed and interesting. the narrator did a good job hitting the characters personalities and emotions on the head. they were interesting to listen to and made me feel as if i was a part of their lives instead of just reading about them. i really liked it.

A great intro to the Dragon King series.
Of Heart and Wings is a great introduction to the world of the Dragon King series and the lives of Raiden and Egan. Its a beautiful portrayal of first love in a fantasy setting. I love McQueen's version of dragons and the lore she has created. The pace of the story is slow in parts as McQueen lingers on certain moments of characters' internal dilemmas, but this doesn't detract anything. She takes great care in setting up the world and each new character that arrives is distinct. I really liked the flirty Queen of the Third. This is a very accessible and enjoyable novel and a good intro into the genre for younger readers.
Audiobook: Talia Carver makes a good job of differentiating the voices of various characters and has a steady pace to the narrative. Their emotional range in the dialogue is not always great (and the younger aged voices made me laugh a little), but they do give a more matter of fact delivery which allows the story itself to take centre stage. Its a very clean narration that is what you want from any audio book. I certainly felt transported into the story and look forward to the next book.

Enjoyable start to a series
This was an enjoyable start to the series. We got immediate world building as the author tells us the history of the Seven Realms and how they came to be. We’re then immediately thrown into some action and introduced to Raiden - heir to the throne of the Sixth Realm. I really liked Raiden, he definitely takes his character from his father (who we see is a wise, benevolent and kind monarch). Egan is so sweet and flustered around Raiden and I loved how their relationship grows. He’s hiding a big secret - no one can know that he’s actually a dragon shifter.
I really love that the sexuality of Raiden and Egan, and their blossoming relationship isn’t a point of contention in the story - and that King Rodick (Raiden’s father) is accepting of this (something that all parents should be).
We have some great side characters too (I particularly liked Raiden’s younger brother) which definitely kept me engaged.
First time listening to this narrator- and I’ll definitely listen to more. Enjoyable and engaging.
