Summary
Shortly after 9.30 in the morning, a young man walks into Surf City, Bondi’s newest shopping complex. He’s wearing a dark grey hoodie - and a bomb around his neck.
Just a few minutes later, he is locked in a shop on the upper floor. And trapped with him are four innocent bystanders.
For police chaplain Paul Doherty, called to the scene by Senior Sergeant Boehm, it’s a story that will end as tragically as it began. For this is clearly no ordinary siege. The boy, known as Ali Khan, seems as frightened as his hostages and has yet to utter a single word.
The seconds tick by for the five in the shop: Mitchell, the talented schoolboy; Mouse, the shop assistant; Kimmi, the nail-bar technician; and Roger Callaghan, the real estate agent whose reason for being in Bondi that day is far from innocent.
And, of course, there’s Ali Khan. Is he the embodiment of evil, as the villagers in his Tanzanian birthplace believe? Or just an innocent boy, betrayed at every turn, who just wants a place to call home?

What a shame
Pretty sure I'd have loved this story, the narration was so awful I really had to force myself to keep listening. Awful accents, awful character voices, awful pronunciation just made my ears cry.
The story (which I'd recommend in written word if you are able to enjoy it that way) is really good. It is about how a whole range of prejudices culminate in a very much avoidable disaster. Characters to love, hate and to flip flop from love to hate and back again.
I'd recommend Audible have this revoiced.

Good story but some of the writing is irritating
It's an interesting and engaging story and at times thought-provoking over the plight of refugees. However, two things about the recording spoiled my overall enjoyment. I found it very irritating that dialogue between two characters had 'he said' "she said' after every interchange or if it was two people of the same gender 'x said' 'said'. The narrator was differentiating between character by the tone of his voice . Secondly there are lots of simulated phone calls with the caller barely intelligible and simulated tannoy announcements that are also difficult to hear. Subsequent to this novel I started to listen to the author's The Cuckoo's Cry but it's also full of 'he said' 'she' said' and simulated phone calls so annoying that I've given up.
The narrator is excllent.

Wonderful story
This book was nothing like I expected, by the description I thought I would be bored and give up but I’m so glad I didn’t. A simple but beautifully written story with real deep meaning, which has you been in thought. The characters and their backgrounds are interacted into the story, leaving you wondering where this was all leading. The main character, the boy that no one gave a chance, no one cared about becomes fascinating and you really do feel sympathy for.

I'm glad to say it wasn't a who dunit, or a love story, it had interest and a few twists, enjoyed listening to the narrators voice.

I can’t even think of a heading…
This book destroyed me. It’s well written, but I don’t want to call it ‘beautiful’, because the ending punched me in the gut. I was not prepared for it. Having said that, it’s a brilliant read. I just need to cry for a bit now…

Disappointed
I was on a run of books by this author. Had been enthralled by them all up to this one. The story was poignant but that was as far as it goes. The story is narrated in the character of the priest, who I think was supposed to come across as kind, but was so utterly sanctimonious and disrespectful towards various group. I found myself so irritated by the dreadful narration and the priest’s character that it put me off the story entirely. Will not stop me listening to another one of her books though!

Entertaining read
I've binged Caroline Overingtons books over the last couple of weeks & find them entertaining, interesting, sometimes feels a bit like people watching, I look forward to the next one!

Enjoyable and an easy listen.
This wasn’t my favourite book I’ve listened to so far by this author but I still enjoyed it. The narrator’s voice got a bit of getting used to and he pronounces his ‘th’ as ‘f’ but I got over that after a while! A good story. Enjoyed it. Onto the next Caroline Overington book.

Verbal tick
I do enjoy CO’s books but couldn’t carry on listening to this one. The narrator pronounces th as v - ie together as togever. After a while each th said a a v stopped me listening.
