Summary

Countless have been the biographies of successful fighter pilots of World War Two. Yet, the truth is that only a small percentage of fighter pilots were responsible for the vast majority of victories. Most fighter pilots never even damaged an enemy aircraft, much less shot one out of the sky. Some never even saw the enemy throughout their entire operational flying days. One such was Warrant Officer Douglas Adams.

Yet, although his flying career was marked by its lack of contact with the enemy, it was not without risk. By its very nature, wartime flying posed many challenges to pilots even without the predations of the enemy to contend with. This was especially true of night flying, when every flight, always under blackout conditions, meant severance of visual orientation with the Earth, and the pilot had only his instruments and his radar operator to guide him through the night sky.

No Demon of Darkness is not a chronicle of violent clashes with the Luftwaffe's bombers over England; it is the tale of a young pilot and the challenges he faced in learning to fly, and in flying heavy fighters such as the Bristol Beaufighter and De Haviland Mosquito. It is also about setbacks and successes. Above all, it is about what it often meant to be an inexperienced operational pilot in wartime.
