Summary

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Nightfall Berlin by Jack Grimwood, read by Daniel Weyman.

In 1986, news that East-West nuclear-arms negotiations are taking place lead many to believe the Cold War may finally be thawing.

For British intelligence officer Major Tom Fox, however, it is business as usual.

Ordered to arrange the smooth repatriation of a defector, Fox is smuggled into East Berlin. But it soon becomes clear that there is more to this than an old man wishing to return home to die - a fact cruelly confirmed when Fox's mission is fatally compromised.

Trapped in East Berlin, hunted by an army of Stasi agents and wanted for murder by those on both sides of the Wall, Fox must somehow elude capture and get out alive.

But to do so he must discover who sabotaged his mission and why....

I hope there are more books by this author

I really enjoyed this book, I thought the idea was an original twist on the usual spy stories

The filth of international politics

Featuring a thinly veiled portrayal of Lord Mountbatten and others, this isn’t an easy to read spy romp despite shoot outs and spy craft but it still rattled along. The ex-ballerina, ex-sniper modern elder of all talents is rapidly becoming my favourite character!

too complex

very difficult to follows the many sub plots. Also too much detail about incidental characters. The final scenes are totally unbelievable

Still trying to unravel the story

First Jack Grimwood book for me and got it because Daniel Weyman is such a good narrator. He did his best with material that isn’t up to his usual standard. It may be one of those stories that is better on the page than read aloud. I found it hard to follow and slightly tedious, as well as simply unbelievable in places.

The story moves back and forth to different locations and time frames with virtually no explanation. I think the author is trying to do a spot of Le Carré’s enigmatic prose but it just doesn’t come off. Don’t think I’ll bother with any other of his books.

Different from many spy stories, well constructed

Thoroughly enjoyable book. Several different narratives skillfully woven together. The final scene stretches credulity but that's forgivable in this genre.
The book is well narrated with just the right amount of expression (ie not too much!)

V good book, exceptional narrator

I limit the number of 5 stars I give but this deserves it. The story line is good, the characters and writing style engaging and of the 100s I’ve listened to,the narrator one of the very best

Great Book

Good plot and I’d like to hear more titles from this author if I rejoin.
