Summary

The extraordinary first novel by the master of storytelling.

THE EXTRAORDINARY FIRST NOVEL BY THE MASTER OF STORYTELLING

ACCLAIMED BBC RADIO 4 DRAMATISATION WITH ALL-STAR CAST INCLUDING JAMES MCAVOY, NATALIE DORMER, DAVID HAREWOOD, SOPHIE OKONEDO AND BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH

Under the streets of London lies a world most people could never dream of.

When Richard Mayhew stops to help a girl he finds bleeding in the street, his unremarkable life changes in an instant.

This act of kindness leads him to a place filled with murderers and angels, pale girls in black velvet, a Beast in a labyrinth and an Earl who holds Court in a tube train. It is strangely familiar yet utterly bizarre.

Here is London Below, the city of people who have fallen between the cracks. And for Richard Mayhew, it's just the beginning.

"Prose that dances and dazzles.... Gaiman describes the indescribable." (Susanna Clarke)

"It's virtually impossible to read more than ten words by Neil Gaiman and not wish he would tell you the rest of the story." (Observer)

"Much too clever to be caught in the net of a single interpretation." (Philip Pullman)

Beautifully Neil Gaiman!

This is a great read and typically in the great Neil Gaiman style, dark, very dark, but hilarious, frightening in places, but full of the best things in life too, loyalty, kindness, strength in adversity, humour, true friendships and sacrifices for those friendships.

The characters are great, and the main one is likeable and builds, as you read/listen, into a person of true integrity. It is the ultimate 'grown up' fairy tale, and is cleverly devised, with reference to the book's play on real places in and around London (you do not need to be familiar with theses places), and how they came to be called what they did. It is also, in the vain of the best fairy tales, full of moral examples of good and bad 'reaping as they sow'.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first, second and third listen, yes really its one of those listens that you want to start again as soon as you have finished it's that good!.

Sits between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings

Where does Neverwhere rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Top third

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Satisfactory if somewhat predictable

Have you listened to any of Neil Gaiman’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No I haven't. If the genre is the same, I'll come back to him but not just yet. Need a book in touch with the world I know

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No, the whole concept was so far fetched from reality that was difficult to be truly moved.

Any additional comments?

If you love 'fantasy' as a genre, combined with a dark thriller....this is the book for you

Gaiman is a legend

Loved Stardust, loved this too - the Lady Door is such an intricate character! Now on to American Gods!

Best

The story starts slowly - and for the first chapter or so I wasn't convinced it was much good. But it gradually wove itself into one of the best and immersive stories ever!

Weird and wonderful

A strange journey into familiar names of London, with a dreamlike or nightmarish, otherworld quality to the scenes that's woven by a master storyteller.
The main character is well fleshed out, accompanied by a large cast of vividly described extras that suits the idea of the large populace of London.
Gaiman knows how to tell his tale well; his voice is neither annoying or too theatrical, so you can really immerse yourself.
My only complaint is that the story was too short somehow, and I wanted to know more after getting so wrapped up in this fantastic skewed mirror of the familiar. But then a good story ought to leave you wanting more!

Love this story

Have read this book numerous times and loved it. I can’t read as much as I used to so the audio version is ideal.
Was a little unsure how the author would be as a narrator but, for this book, he was ideal as he knows exactly how he wants his characters to sound.
The story is enthralling. One of those that you want to keep listening to until it’s finished but then when it is, you wish there was more.
Not going to go into what the story is about, there are plenty of reviews that do.
Just wanted to say that I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves enthralling fantasy.

What an imagination, original and captivating

An original and captivating story, initially I felt it was a little slow to 'get going' but soon realised the background given was important as made the contrast between the two worlds stand out. Gaiman's story telling brings the characters to life in this exciting world. Well worth it.
