About this listen
Taking one last look around her attic room in Covent Garden Nettie knows there is no turning back, they must run for their lives…
London, 1875. Thanks to her hapless father, Nettie Carroll has had to grow up quickly. While Nettie is sewing night and day to keep food on the table, her gullible father has trusted the wrong man again. Left with virtually nothing but the clothes they stand up in, he’s convinced that their only hope lies across the English Channel in France.
Nettie has little but her dreams left to lose. Even far from home trouble follows them, with their enemies quietly drawing closer. But Nettie has a secret, and it’s one with the power to save them.
Can she find the courage to trust in herself and pave the way for a brighter future?

Fabulous dynamic duo Dilly Court & Annie Aldington
I have loved all Dilly Courts books and was really looking forward to her latest release; it didn’t fail to please and is another wonderful cosy read with a little continental flavour. The brilliant Annie Aldington provides an excellent narration and a fluent delivery as she moves wonderfully between the characters.
In typical Dilly Court style the book begins in London in the year 1875, the heroine Nettie Collins and her father Robert, a slightly eccentric artist are living hand to mouth in Covent Garden. Rather naïvely Robert was duped into painting what he believed to be legitimate copies of the old masters. Duke, the villain of the story then sold the paintings as original masterpieces, pocketing large sums of money and paying Robert a pittance. Once the police become involved Nettie and her father are forced to flee and leave abruptly without Nettie having a chance to say her farewells. As they begin their journey to a new life Nettie is surprised when they are joined by Byron one of her friends, Byron is clearly sweet on Nettie but she seems to be unaware of his feelings.
Quite quickly we are introduced to multiple characters but Dilly Court provides a great introduction to all of them, so there is no confusion in trying to work out who is who. As the characters travel through their various journeys across several countries there are multiple potential love interests. These are intertwined amongst an intriguing plot to save the virtue of one of the female characters from the clutches of the villain and prove the integrity of Nettie's father.
In typical Dilly style this is an uncomplicated heartening read; it is story of never giving up hope, true friendship and determination, overcoming adversity and very much about caring for others. It's an easy read and had an interesting twist at the end. I loved it and would love to see a sequel and find out what happened to all the characters.

Wonderful
Another lovely story by DIlly Court and read brilliantly by Annie Aldington as usual. I can certainly recommend this story which ended happily for Netty and her father, also not forgetting Constance and the little orphan girl.
