About this listen

A steampunk adventure with a serial killer, romance, and a few broken hearts.

Cara Devon has always suffered curiosity and impetuousness, but tangling with a serial killer might cure that. Permanently.

London, 1861: Impoverished noble Cara has a simple mission after the strange death of her father - sell off his damned collection of priceless artifacts. Her plan goes awry when aristocratic beauties start dying of broken hearts, an eight-inch-long brass key hammered through their chests. A killer hunts amongst the nobility, searching for a regal beauty and an ancient Egyptian relic rumored to hold the key to immortality.

Her Majesty's Enforcers are in pursuit of the murderer and they see a connection between the gruesome deaths and Cara. So does she - somewhere in London her father hid Nefertiti's Heart, a fist-sized diamond with strange mechanical workings. Adding further complication to her life, notorious crime lord Viscount Nathaniel Lyons is relentless in his desire to lay his hands on Cara and the priceless artifact. If only she could figure out his motive.

Self-preservation fuels Cara's search for the gem. In a society where everyone wears a mask to hide their true intent, she needs to figure out who to trust, before she makes a fatal mistake.

Sex!

I enjoyed characters, story and good narrator but I didn’t understand why there was so much descriptive sex. It wasn’t necessary for this storyline , spoilt it really because I enjoyed it. Not sure if I would do the next book.

Surprised

I thought I was getting an adventure story much in the line of Elizabeth Peters, but this is quite an explicit bodice ripper! Oh well, the story itself was quite interesting, not sure if I will read book 2 (romance is not my thing).

I started this but couldn't listen because the narrator was too high and squeaky for my hearing. This one I will read.

Great Story, Poor Narration

Generally the narrator is good but the male lead sounds like he’s 60. The story is excellent and I’ve enjoyed reading it previously but I had to stop listening to read it myself as it’s very offputting!

I wanted to like this but narrator was awful

I might buy the book and read it myself because I think the story has legs but the narrator was sub par. She didn’t know how to pronounce certain words, inflection in the wrong places or just flat. In the editing suite many things could have been picked up on and re-recorded.
Not even a tenth of the way in and my ears can endure no more.
Sorry…

Enjoyable listen

I'm glad I ignored the bad reviews and listened to this as I quite enjoyed it.
Ignore reviews that say it should be in the erotic section, its not full of sex and it is steampunk after all which does have a sexy nature. Looking forward to listening to the next one.

Disappointing romantically heavy

Should come with a sexual abuse trigger warning.

Don’t bother if you expect a strong female lead. Or an intriguing mystery.

Thought this was a mystery and it began ok but then devolved into a dull story sickeningly heavy on the romance. I couldn’t believe the protagonist, with her painful past, would behave and act in this way. But that’s only when she wasn’t being petulant and childish wanting to stomp her foot or kick a table. Characters weren’t likeable, skipped to the end cos I’d taken a guess at the murderer, it’s fairly obvious, if only because the bulk of the book revolves around the two would be lovers and their shenanigans.

However if you like romantic tales, with lots of details on darting tongues probing mouths and hitches of breath with steamy eye contact etc, with a smattering of steampunk and a pale background of mystery then this is for you.

Low rent Mills and Boon.

I bought this book as I really like the steam punk genre, however this book which started well, quickly descended into repetitive seedy sexual fumblings on the part of the heroine, with verbose and flowery language, which made the whole dull, dull, dull. This title has been incorrectly labelled should be in erotica, as it is clearly the attempt of the author to create a steam punk porn book. If that’s your bag this is for you but if you want a story don’t bother.

Couldn't finish this because of the narrator

The fake period English accents were too irritating to bear through. The story may be worth trying in print.

Horrible reader

I've actually already read this book and figured I'd enjoy it again. A sharp no to that, the person reading it sounds like she's trying way too hard to be British and is reading to a child.
