About this listen

Book 3 in the Gaunt's Ghosts series.

On the shattered world of Verghast, Gaunt and his Ghosts find themselves embroiled within an ancient and deadly civil war as a mighty hive-city is besieged by an unrelenting foe.

Listen to it because: The return of a classic Gaunt's Ghosts novel! The Tanith First deploy to Verghast to help break the Chaos siege of Vervunhive. Tanks clash with daemon engines, Imperial Guardsmen make brave last stands and Colonel-Commissar Gaunt steps up and takes control of the war effort, showing for the first time the command abilities that will go on to make him a legend.

The story: On the world of Verghast, a grinding war between two hive cities - one loyal to the Imperium, the other fallen to the worship of the Dark Gods - is bolstered by the forces of the Astra Militarum, spearheaded by the Colonel-Commissar Gaunt and the Tanith First and Only. But bitter rivalries and treachery threaten to derail the defence of Vervunhive, and it falls to Gaunt to take command of the Imperial forces and forge victory from an almost certain defeat.

a great second book.

Yes book three is definitely a brilliant book two.

Skip 2 and you can come back to it later should the other 13 or so Ghost novels not be sufficient.

Still one of the best.

As good on audible as when I first read it all those years ago. Narrated beautifully and really tells the story well.

One of my favourite sci-fi/fantasy books

Possibly one of the best books in the Gaunts ghost series. The portrayal of the siege of a hive is beautifully delivered

Such a good book!

What a great read it listen this book is!
The narrator is still killing it, wish I had a smidge of his talent and I would get into narrating lol
This book has brought back a lot of memories of the grim dark to come (sheds manly tear) dan abnet is way to good at this and knows how to write a damn fine character! whether he makes you love them or hate them you'll remember them for sure!
I only hope they are in the process of filling the gap between the next book and the lastest trilogy showing on audible so I can enjoy them again a new!
once again bravo the narrator toby longworth defo googling other books he has narrated, just saw he narrated eisenhorn yes mate!

Best book in the series yet

If you liked the ghosts this far you’ll love them here. There’s a good dose of the military literature along with the many points of heroism but a lot of humanity and a good depiction of the cost of war. Well written and read with so far best pacing in the story I’ve yet encountered in these guard books. I will be replaying or even rereading this again for sure!

One of the very best pieces of 40k fiction

One of the best pieces of 40k fiction, showing a realistic sense of the chaos of war, with a wonderfully evocative reading performance.
