Summary

Robert McCrum was 42 when he suffered a massive stroke which left one side of his body paralysed, his speech drastically impaired and his sense of himself radically altered. My Year Off traces McCrum's gruelling recovery as he regains sensation and begins to come to terms, with the help of his family, with what can and cannot be recovered after a grave injury. It is a moving remonstrance against human frailty and a vital and insightful exploration of hope, despair, determination and, ultimately, love.

Hold onto your hat! This is a deep, deep dive of a high literary cliff into the underworld of stroke survivors.

A superb account both by a literary agent, editor and now diarist and his new wife of his life-threatening and their life-changing illness.

Deeply affecting, richly complex and hence completely fascinating.

The structure of this book, chronicling their experiences from falling ill, to the birth of their first child 2 years later, is riveting throughout.
I’m left wanting updates and an invitation into how this restless mind is adjusting to parenting, to being a father, to being a husband now of 27 years and a rehabilitating stroke patient also 27 years on.
Perhaps a sequel to this will include the voice and reflections of a young 25yr old Alice McCrum to compliment the voices and perspectives of her lovely, fascinating parents?!

This takes you deep into the topsy-turvy world of the sick and the literally mind-bending experience of the stroke sufferer.

I found it compelling and trust you, dear reader, will too!
