About this listen

Provocative, inspiring, and unflinchingly honest, My Grandfather's Son is the story of one of America's most remarkable and controversial leaders, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, told in his own words.

Thomas speaks out, revealing the pieces of his life he holds dear, detailing the suffering and injustices he has overcome, including the polarizing Senate hearing involving a former aide, Anita Hill, and the depression and despair it created in his own life and the lives of those closest to him. In this candid and deeply moving memoir, a quintessential American tale of hardship and grit, Clarence Thomas recounts his astonishing journey for the first time.

A living legend and a wonderful story

I couldn’t turn this book off from the moment I started it. A wonderful story of self reliance, family and perseverance. Clarence Thomas is a man of dignity and honour, he is a role model for so many people to go beyond their own environment and become what you want to be through hard work. Clarence Thomas is one of my hero’s after this book.

Superb story

Brilliant human account from only the second black Supreme Court judge. Also shows what a nasty guy joe Biden is. Well written and beautifully performed

Inspiring

A fantastic book about an inspirational man. Hearing the book read by Justice Thomas himself made it feel so much more personal.

An incredible story

Clarence Thomas does not, mostly by choice, appear as a media figure as much as other Supreme Court judges do. He's not a rocktstar celebrity of the court, like RBG was or how Sotomayor appeared during her book tour. Yet his story is nothing short of incredible. This book almost brought me to tears many times, the emotive language of the racism he experienced and how ideology drew him in coupled with a harrowing past of poverty and fraught family life. Put judicial and political views aside, and read this with an open mind, How one man can come from nothing and make it to the highest court in the land, it's something that transcends the words of a simple review. I recommend it in the strongest terms. His opinions are formed from life experience, and we could all learn from them.
