A story of first love. A gay friends-to-lovers romance between two closeted soccer players.

He’s cocky, he’s arrogant, he’s entitled to his big ego. He an international footballer and a multimillionaire. Carlos Garcia’s a huge success on and off the pitch, and he’s got it all. Joining a new football club, he wants his teammates to like him, especially the one man who sets his pulse racing.

As the quietest guy on the football team, Harry Carter avoids attention. He’s so scared of people finding out he’s gay that he’s made sure there are just clothes in his closet. He has nothing to hide, there’s no history, no past, no secret boyfriend, not even a one-night stand. Ever.

Things are changing. Outside of work, Harry’s best friends are a discreet gay couple, but how is Harry going to keep all the secrets when the new guy on the football team keeps hanging around?

Likeable m/m sports romance!

This second book in HJ Perry’s football romance series follows quiet achiever, Harry, and his loud and cocky teammate, Carlos. We were introduced to Harry in book 1, but it wasn’t clear he was gay. Carlos actively pursues a reluctant Harry, slowly breaking down his reserve through genuine friendship. Once again, we see the pressures on elite footballers to stay in the closet, although this was a very pleasant, low-angst story. Book 1 had fire in the belly about homophobia in elite team sports, I didn’t feel the same passion to right a wrong here. 🎧 Piers Ryman narrated competently with his usual array of British accents.

Secret lovers...

Interesting view of football players, the sport and the LGBT community around it. Two grown men having a secret affair because of homophobia in sports. Their romance sweet and with a slow burn. Behind the scenes but with support from family. I liked that Carlos knew what he wanted and went for it. Harry took a little more time to convince everything would be ok. Together they are awesome.

as good as the ebook

The story is always full stars, because if I wouldn't like the story as ebook, I wouldn't listen to the audiobook. I can't listen to an audiobook without knowing the book, that's not possible for me.

The performance from the narrator is also very important for me. I can't listen to a lot, because my English as a non-native-speaker isn't so perfect to follow a whole story over hours, when the narrator speaks too fast or too sloppy. Normally I have to SEE the person, who is talking to me in English. It took me a little bit, to come into the narrator, but at the end, it worked. I only have to take a few breaks between. I'm just not yet finish with the book, I’m over the half, but I listen enough to give a review.

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings:

5* - very very good
it's like an A+

4* - very good and will be often re-listening
it's like an A

3* - it's more then a one-time-listening.
it's like a B

Cute story :)

Story: a cute story with medium angst. I liked how different the characters were compared to book 1! A completely different focus and plot, so it felt fresh despite the same football backdrop.

Narration: The only issue I had was that Harry’s accent got irritating for me and grated with how I imagined him as a person. That being said, the narrator did a great job and it was easy to follow the story and all the characters.
