Summary

Chief Inspector Acton and Detective Sergeant Kathleen Doyle know firsthand how the administration of justice can often follow a labyrinthine path. As they pursue a self-appointed judge, jury, and executioner, Acton's own questionable methods may prove his undoing.

The notoriety of being married to the enigmatically brilliant Lord Acton presents its own challenges as newly promoted Detective Sergeant Doyle contends with a series of homicides that seem to point to a vigilante killer. The victims are all criminals who eluded justice - until they ran afoul of an avenger whose modus operandi is a bullet to the back of the head. The key to the vigilante's identity lies in connecting the cold cases and searching for an event that may have triggered retribution after all these years - a daunting task.

Meanwhile Doyle finds herself shadowed by a mysterious figure. After the man steps forward to rescue her from harm, she wonders why he is invested in protecting her. But when she learns he's in contact with Acton's nemesis, she fears she's being used in a plot against her husband, whose personal code of justice has the potential to put his reputation - and his life - at risk.

For his own part, Acton must outmaneuver an unscrupulous reporter being fed information from someone within the ranks of Scotland Yard. The stakes are high, and both Doyle and Acton must work independently to outwit the players before their lives are brought crashing down like a house of cards.

the narrator's voice is just odd like she's trying too hard and the story kinda patchy and unfinished

Absolutely superb..at last. Fascinating characters

I have listened to such rubbish lately that this was fresh air. The characters are so strong (especially the women) which is very lacking in books I have heard lately. The relationships completely believable, the story is good but the books strength lies in those being written about. The narration is excellent too. So important that the reader understands what the writer is trying to convey. brilliant and can't wait to go back and start from the beginning.

Reminiscent of the Inspector Lynley Mysreries

Written by an American woman, the terminology was.frequently incorrect. None the less, I enjoyed it.

Slow Start

It took halfway through the book before it really caught my interest, but how credible is it that an English Lord would marry a penniless Irish girl? Maybe the rampant sex had something to do with it, although mercifully we did not have to hear all the gory details. There were so many secrets between these two it’s a wonder they were on the same side. Finally there was some kind of conclusion - but we were never told what it was! I might listen to another in the series, but not if I have to spend a credit.

And I wasted credits on these?

Can’t believe I wasted two credits on books from this series. I gave up on both before the halfway point which is something I rarely do. Not enough hours left in my life to complete either.
Wish it was easier to return books these days.

Mawkish narrator ruins a potentially good book

It is quite possible I may have enjoyed this story, but I found it impossible to focus on the plot due to the mincing and mawkish narrating. Absolutely dreadful!

Unfinished

This is a frustratingly unfinished novel!!!! Did they catch the vigilante killer? How did Solgenic die? Who killed him? How did they get to him in prison? Also what about Acton’s cousin’s lie about how they’re related…..this book needs revision…..

How did it get published?

Possibly the worst book I’ve listened to on Audible. Did the author do any research? Obviously written by an American, sidewalk instead of pavement, Academy instead of training school among those errors. The book was frankly insulting to women and just ridiculous. I listened at night. Good cure for insomnia.

Appalling narrator

From the very beginning this ‘yarn’ is let down by the ‘once upon a time’ mincing voice, and progressively grows worse!
CertAin accents are a joke, french ‘Allo allo, was rediculous, which spilled over occasionally into other characters!
Makes one really grateful for the Juliet Stevensons of this world.
The story not too bad, but somehow trivial.
