About the Narrator
Jilly Bond is a highly-respected actress of stage, radio and television with a career spanning three-and-a-half decades. Having featured on Judge John Deed, Doctors, and As If, she is perhaps best known for her theatre appearances at the National Theatre and across the UK where she starred in plays by the likes of William Shakespeare, George Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde. Bond has provided narration for numerous productions across the Audible catalogue and has featured on hundreds of audiobooks in the last 15 years. She has been awarded four Audiophile magazine Earphones Awards.

Review
This novel follows three friends, with a sometimes fractious relationship, as they try to find out who killed the fourth of them, and to save a woman wrongly accused of the murder. It’s less a detective story than a picture of the society and politics of a not very well off neighbourhood in London in the early years of the 17th century, which suited me fine. There’s a whole range of characters, including the mayor and aldermen, a Dutch merchant, a dodgy publican and the wife whose business it was until he wheedled control of it from her, poor girls to whom the three friends are teaching practical skills, and – unexpectedly – female gang bosses. (Sympathetic male characters are in limited supply, but I’d be limiting my reading list if I excluded novels where that’s the case.)
There was the odd bit of word play I didn’t think worked, and one of the cliffhangers didn’t quite do it for me. But these are details - I enjoyed the book and it kept me wanting to read the next chapter. The final two hours I ended up listening to in a single evening, unusually; most of the last hour is a compelling and tightly written narrative of the events in a momentous hour in the story’s time. That bit in particular is perhaps best listened to in one go.
The reader does well, telling the story and voicing a range of characters – occasionally I thought one minor character indistinguishable from another, but that’s perhaps not so surprising when there’s such a range of characters involved.

A wonderful new whodunnit
A group of tradeswomen in 17th century London not only seek to find who has killed one of their number, but must try to prevent the execution of an innocent woman.The detail of street life is absorbing and the pace quickens as the scaffold is prepared for her hanging.
Excellent variations in the narrator's voice make it clear which of the characters is speaking, without the exaggerated accents of some readers.
