NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK

Nothing brings a family together like a murder next door.

“I just loved how intriguing the mystery is but also the dynamics between a grandmother, a mother, and a teenage daughter."" —Reese Witherspoon

Think: Gilmore Girls, but with murder.

High-powered businesswoman Lana Rubicon has a lot to be proud of: her keen intelligence, impeccable taste, and the L.A. real estate empire she’s built. But when she finds herself trapped 300 miles north of the city, convalescing in a sleepy coastal town with her adult daughter Beth and teenage granddaughter Jack, Lana is stuck counting otters instead of square footage—and hoping that boredom won’t kill her before the cancer does.

Then Jack—tiny in stature but fiercely independent—happens upon a dead body while kayaking. She quickly becomes a suspect in the homicide investigation, and the Rubicon women are thrown into chaos. Beth thinks Lana should focus on recovery, but Lana has a better idea. She’ll pull on her wig, find the true murderer, protect her family, and prove she still has power.

With Jack and Beth’s help, Lana uncovers a web of lies, family vendettas, and land disputes lurking beneath the surface of a community populated by folksy conservationists and wealthy ranchers. But as their amateur snooping advances into ever-more dangerous territory, the headstrong Rubicon women must learn to do the one thing they’ve always resisted: depend on each other.

Really enjoyed it!

Wasn't sure at first, but stuck with it and was glad I did! The relationships between the characters are lovely and the story was cleverly told. Narration was good, too.

The place and the relationship between three generations of a family. Three strong women .

The story was fine-
Slightly slow but plenty of mysteries, dead ends and the evolving story. The three female
Lead characteristics were very interesting and it had a satisfying conclusion.

Great Easy Listen

I really enjoyed this story, it was a nice twist on a typical murder plot line. The characters are great and plot progressed nicely which kept me wanting to get to the next chapter.

A fantastic, family-oriented whodunit!

I loved this. Easy listening, but still really engaging.
An interesting dynamic around 3 generations of women, and a crime that truly brings them together. I'd recommend it for something a little more light-hearted compared to the typical whodunits.

Go Lana

Good characterisation of a strong, mature lady & how she draws her daughter & grand-daughter in to helping her solve a murder by working through her own suspicions

Good idea for a story but just didn’t grab me

The story itself was good and the author painted a clear picture of the scene and characters, but I just was not invested in the story, we knew it wasn’t Jack so I wasn’t really bothered who did it as I didn’t know enough about any of the suspects so I just didn’t care. I was really close to not finishing but pressed on with it

3.7 rounded up!

More focused on the three generations than the mystery which slowed things up at times but still something I kept returning to.

Really Good

No wonder this is listed in Reece Witherspoon's book club and the New York Times best seller list. It's really well written for a amatuer sloth murder mystery, The plot is not rocket science but it doesn't need to be as you get drawn into the relationships of 3 generations of women coming back together again. Beautifully narrated by Jane Oppenheimer who really brought this book to life.
A big FIVE stars going out to the Author & Narrator on this one.

Loved it

I picked this because I’m a big fan of Simon’s non-fiction work about museums. Yeah it’s a nerd thing but happily the novel was very enjoyable in its own right. I love the family matriarch and the plot had enough red herrings to keep you guessing so I’m happy all round!

Far too long and drawn out.

Unnecessarily long and drawn out causing me to lose attention and interest. It could have told the same story in a more succinct way.
