Summary

What we eat has a huge impact on our physical and mental health and on our performance in our chosen sport, whether we’re elite-level athletes or enthusiastic amateurs. But with so much information out there, how do we choose a way of eating that is right for us?

More Fuel You is a clear and authoritative guide to making the most of your nutrition. Leading sports dietitian Renee McGregor looks at fueling needs for sporting participation, training, and competition and analyses some popular diet options, including low-carbohydrate, vegan, and intermittent fasting.

But this is not just another sports-nutrition book. Renee recommends a holistic view: by understanding the human body and being self-aware, you can find the ideal nutritional approach for you personally. Significantly, Renee also discusses areas of sports nutrition in populations that are often overlooked, including women’s health and menopause, healthy aging, and the inclusion of individuals who don’t necessarily conform to the stereotype of an athlete, such as people living with chronic health conditions.

Whatever your race, genetics, gender, age, socioeconomic status, body type, or ability, it’s important to be your own athlete, fuel appropriately for your body, and enjoy what you do.

Whether you’re a world-class or real-world athlete, if you’re serious about sport and nutrition, you can’t afford not to listen to this book.

Interesting but I'm not the right audience

The book opens with a chapter about calculating your fueling needs and how to break that down into the different macros. I used the information given to create a nice calculator in excel that is easy to follow. I found that to be very helpful, easy to follow and informative.

The remainder of the book discusses different popular diets or forms of eating and the benefits and disadvantages. It has some good information for masters and female athletes.

The book does seem to be aimed at athletes who are in a healthy weight range and really drives home the message that you shouldn't aim to lose weight if you don't need to as it could negatively affect your performance and health. The limitation of the book there is that I am definitely overweight even though I am pretty active (I try to cycle/run about 5 to 10 hours a week) and I found that (with good reason for the intended audience who may have eating disorders) it could be a little preachy when I have a very valid need to lose weight (though I definitely have some issues with my attitude towards my weight and body image).

The narration is nicely read and Renee has a pleasant voice though it was easy to become distracted at times so I do think the paper version has it's advantages if you really want to understand all of the details.

TLDR: It's a nice book, well enough read but has a focus on ensuring athletes who do not really need to lose weight eat enough and doesn't really consider the overweight/obese athletes

A helpful book

I enjoyed that it was read by the author as that always makes it much more interesting.

Finally a book which acknowledges its more complex than calories in vs calories out. A book which finally suggests to ask yourself how you’re feeling instead of what your gamin suggests too

A good listen thanks

Excellent practical advise for runners

Listening to this audio book allowed me to learn and think more about my nutrition. So many topics in this book hit a chord with me. I especially enjoyed that the book was narrated by Renee too and that she shared her own personal approaches to ultra running and nutrition. I highly recommend this audio and will definitely be purchasing a hard copy to refer back to. A great listen thank you!

Informative yet easy to listen to

Firstly - I'm a runner who has a 'light-touch' interest in nutrition, without being overly bothered by diets etc.

I found this really easy to listen to (both the way the book is written, and the narration). Whilst not all the chapters were areas I would normally be interested in, I still found myself listening along and thinking about the topic.

Renee's fresh and plain language approach to describing the issues with today's diet fads (both the potential pitfalls, and some downright falsehoods) is great - she make the topic very accessible and avoids getting too deep into the science, whilst still making it obvious that she knows her stuff.
My only criticism would be the book tends to focus a lot on the association between weight and diet (whilst probably true for many, I was hoping for some greater understanding of diet and performance links).

I'd recommend this to anyone with an interest in sports and nutrition, especially those who have either tried various diets or who might be tempted to - inform yourself.

So informative

So good for those wishing to understand the relationship between the body, nutrition and performance. I would say even those who are not athletes should read it to see how important eating enough is for general health and balance, instead of listening to the diet industry.

A Nutrition Book not a Diet Book (at last!)

In More Fuel You, author, elite athlete and professional nutritionist Renee McGregor breaks down much of the myth of the quick fix diet and instead presents a series of solutions and pathways for athletes at whatever level or sport to fuel their activities, and deal with eating issues and disorders. What I found most useful about this book was its approach to different sorts of scenarios and a best fit solution to that, it contained practical advice and simple advice that was easily digestible (sorry). Recommended for runners, climbers, cyclists etc, not just for competing athletes. The book is also littered with many case studies and Renee's take on these which was useful, particularly the carbs one and the climbing one.

An interesting book jam packed with information

If you are interested in or even just mildly curious in the roll that food, nutrition and fueling has to play in getting the best from your body then you will love this book. Renee has a vast knowledge and experience in dealing with athletes and folk who are looking to make changes and improvements in how they fuel and is more than happy to share what she knows. Her focus on what is best for anyone given individual comes through, her method is most certainly not a one size fits all. Renee takes into account, factors such as age, gender, background and so on, she listens. I particularly enjoy the peoples own stories in their own words, all so different and the professional opinion given was based on the individual case. As a masters athlete I enjoyed the chapter focused on this subject. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the best way to fuel for you. I know I will revisit this book, for me, this is alway a good sign. Enjoy!

Informative, Balanced, Refreshing

More Fuel You offers a balanced assessment of the latest science in the nutrition space. It is a refreshing and timely check on the culture of faddism and sensationalism that has taken a dangerous foothold in the discourse around nutrition, especially in the tumultuous social media universe. Unbridled misinformation, in particular promulgated by clickbait headlines and irresponsible social media accounts, has helped to promote unhelpful nutritional beliefs that can lead to heartbreaking consequences in far too many cases. I therefore regard this book as essential education for experts in the field and non-experts alike.

More Fuel You provides guideposts to the latest science while appreciating that there is no one prescriptive leading formula that will be the same for every individual and in fact that the optimal approach for each individual is likely to be a moving target over time. The book is full of nuggets of information that have helped inform my own nutritional approach. The passion of the author for the topic comes across in the audio narration. I recommend the book unreservedly.

Interesting

An interesting insight in to nutrition and sport. Various topics are looked at and I liked how the pros and cons of all the diet strategies included are discussed and assessed without bias. New data from up to date studies are mentioned where relevant to show how understanding of nutrition is constantly evolving.
