Summary
As Hitler was attempting to conquer the Western world, his armies were methodically pillaging the finest art in Europe, from Michelangelos to Vermeers, all stolen for the Führer.
The Monuments Men had a mandate from President Roosevelt to find these artworks, but no vehicles, typewriters, or authority. In a race against time to save the world’s greatest cultural treasures from destruction at the hands of Nazi fanatics, each man constructed his own treasure map. They used tips, records recovered from bombed buildings, and the secret journals of Rose Valland, a French museum employee who secretly tracked Nazi plunder in Paris.
These unlikely heroes, mostly middle-aged family men, walked away from successful careers into the epicentre of the war. This is their story.

Monuments men
Having watched the movie recently I discovered it was based on a true story I them listened to the audible version thoroughly enjoyed both

Soon to be a movie
This is the story that is currently being made into a movie with George Clooney, Matt Damon and Cate Blanchett. I actually loved that it was history that was presented like fiction, which for me made it easier to follow and more entertaining.

Good book, probably better in print
I enjoyed it, but I kept having to rewind when I realised I'd forgotten to pay attention for a while. I get the feeling it's the kind of book to fully appreciate you need to be able to look at the who's who and I suspect maps and pictures that are in the print version.

Goood story but Ruined by The Narratpr
If you seen the movie. Naturally this book is a must read. However I would not recomend the audibook. I cannot stand when the narrator have to take a breath after every sentence. It is super annoying to me, and sadly it ruined the book because to me I found the constant breathing too distracting

No - they have made a film and I hope they have not followed the book

It was so fragmented and became totally boring The detail was there but it did not come across as something that was important. Yes getting the art back to the owners was important but they didn't get it back as most were dead and this made the story a real mish mash which had no real cohesion.

Good until Sexist Remarks
I was enjoying this book up until the author went into a long chauvinistic description of a female curator's appearance and then descended into a totally false and patronising narrative about how the worst part of the nazi occupation of France for women was that they couldn't get silk stockings. No mention of the fact they were murdered, raped, abducted, transported, and killed in the gas chambers no no, the women of France had to draw black lines on their legs to look like they were wearing stockings and then they had the audacity to complain when men leered at them. Absolutely shocking, this book should come with a warning.
