Summary

Ishmael, the narrator, tells of the adventures of Captain Ahab in his relentless quest to seek revenge on the white whale that bit off his leg. Full of allegory and symbolism, Moby Dick is an epic tragedy of tremendous dramatic power and narrative drive. This large-scale adaptation, recorded in America, skilfully reproduces the unique mixture of adventure, myth, history, and philosophy in Melville's epic tale.

Great performance- very realistic

Although great performance by actors, I still struggled to read as I hate any sort of animal abuse, hunting and so on, but had to read it, as it is classic.

A Classic?

Slightly disturbing tale. Although a good dramatisation, I didn't enjoy the story. The characters were interesting and the performance certainly portrayed them extremely well. The music added to the disturbing and haunting atmosphere. If you enjoy this book or style/genre , then you'll like this drama. But it wasn't for me.

Fantastic radio adaptation

I'm normally a bit wary of radio adaptations as they can be very clunky, but this one brings great drama and atmosphere to the story. An excellent cast, augmented by evocative sound effects and music, and a script which captures the heart of this huge novel in just under three hours. Highly recommended.

An enjoyable adaption of a great story.

This magnificent story is very well told here, well cast and nicely acted. It manages to economically capture the atmosphere of the original book whilst moving the plot along briskly. The sound quality could be better but overall this is a very entertaining listen, and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

Nothing less than 5 stars. Call me, Ishmael..!

Any additional comments?

The greatest story ever told, told by the greatest storytellers in the business. BBC drama bring to life the classic tale of madman meeting whale in this epic addition to their drama collection. I would recommend this book to young and old, it's exciting and BBC drama studios did it justice, with whale sounds and eery music injected throughout the listen to add to the atmosphere.

Hard going, awful background music and noise

The book itself is probably great but this version, with almost constant background music and over acted reading, makes it a hard listen. Feel I have to go and read the book as this was just too irritating to give me a fair opinion. Gave 3 stars to the story which may be unfair, the background noise on this means I can’t judge the story fairly sorry.
