About this listen
‘A glittering rush of sugar-sweet enchantment’ Stephanie Garber, Sunday Times bestselling author of A Curse for True Love
In the darkness of night, magic awaits…
Nottingham, 1906
Marietta Stelle longs to be a ballerina but, as Christmas draws nearer, her dancing days are numbered – she must marry and take up her place in society in the New Year. But, when a mysterious toymaker, Dr Drosselmeier, purchases a neighbouring townhouse, it heralds the arrival of magic and wonder in Marietta’s life.
After Drosselmeier constructs an elaborate theatrical set for her final ballet performance on Christmas Eve, Marietta discovers it carries a magic all of its own – a magic darker than anyone could imagine. As the clock chimes midnight, Marietta finds herself transported from her family’s ballroom to a frozen sugar palace, silent with secrets, in a forest of snow-topped fir trees. She must find a way to return home before she’s trapped in Everwood’s enchanting grip forever.
In the darkness of night, magic awaits and you will never forget what you find here…

Festive
I wanted something festive to listen to and enjoyed this, although I sometimes got a little lost. It was a nice retelling.

Took me to place full of magic
This book is everything Iv ever wanted! I perfect blend of romance and drama, magic and wonder! The descriptive language used by the author took me somewhere beyond the pages. Everything was brought to life, and I found my self wanting more as soon as the book ended. Perfect read this Christmas, and next Christmas and the Christmas after that.

Magic
l love the Nutcracker as a story and this has been beautifully retold as a fantasy. And the narration by Tor superb. Lovely voice and easy to listen to

I enjoyed it, but ...
I could nit-pick over parts of the story, but on the whole it was entertaining, which is why I've given it four stars. I did enjoy it. I wish the editor had advised the author over the weaker spots in the story, like the over-use of the word gossamer, and words that didn't belong to that era. There were one or two parts of the story that I felt were unnecessary and not in keeping with a fairytale, even though it's written for adults. But on the whole it made a pleasant change and was worth listening to.
Sadly, I found the narration lacking. The narrator captured different voices reasonably well, but her reading let her down. Throughout the book there were slight pauses as she worked out a pronunciation, and she read into it extra commas and full stops, which spoiled the flow. It was very distracting.

Dark and oh so magical
Terrific narration and I loved the story. It has kept Christmas going for me as I've listened with delight. In my dreams, I wish for a further happy ending for Marietta, but don't wish to spoil the story. Simply lovely

Fashion obsessed!
Read fine.
Story spoiled by an obsession of describing every item of clothing the women wear!
Feels like it's written by an 18 year old fashion mag fantasies. And Audible wouldn't let me return it

Not for me
Personally, I wasn’t really a fan of this. The narrator’s choice of voice for most of the male characters was a little grating. I also found the author’s use of figurative language too much - constant simile and metaphor, even in sections of dialogue, which made it feel very unrealistic.
