About this listen
‘I was born twice: first, as a baby girl, on a remarkably smogless Detroit day of January 1960; and then again, as a teenage boy, in an emergency room near Petoskey, Michigan, in August of l974.’
So begins the breathtaking story of Calliope Stephanides and her truly unique family secret, born on the slopes of Mount Olympus and passed on through three generations.
Growing up in 70s Michigan, Calliope’s special inheritance will turn her into Cal, the narrator of this intersex, inter-generational epic of immigrant life in 20th century America.
Middlesex won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

A beauty!
Narrated so beautifully it sucks you into the story straight away! I really enjoyed listening and even though seems so long, it's actually not, as it's a beauty of a story :)

A superbly written veritabl feast of an experience
I loved this, more an experience than book, was a veritable literary feast, well crafted story lines interwoven with words as finely woven as the silk threads of Desdemona.
The story of the rogue gene, passed through the generations, was expansive, yet intimate, funny, all encompassing , yet private, the story of everyone and the story of individuality.
The narration was sublime, engaging and sonorous, bringing every character to life without cliché.

Don't Let the Runtime Discourage You
A lot of readers may be put off by the long runtime of this audiobook but it is so worthwhile! Middlesex is an engaging and beautiful story- full of surprises

Loved it as an exploration of identity.
Loved it as an exploration of identity.
The intertwining of timelines is a cool means of telling a captivating story. I also appreciated all the research that the author did (anatomy, psychology, history) and how he put it all to work.
Will be reading more from Eugenides.

I adored this book
I adored this book. I was heartbroken when it ended. If you are a fan of Donna Tartt and John Irwing you will love this story.

A magnificent book
What a story! Full of heart, humour, history (modern and ancient). And the narration, a joy. Thank you, Jeffrey Eugenides and Nathan Osgood. It was one of those audiobooks you wish would go on and on.

Excellent, expansive novel
As someone who has an allergy to Very Long Books, I avoided this for quite a while (most I find overwritten, overlong and badly in need of an edit). I am happy to report this is the first VLB I have really enjoyed and not tired of (except for Wild Swans which is really three 9h books). Also, it didn't feel at all like an issue driven book pushing any gender identity agenda; it's just a damn good story that rolls along and sustains interest to the end. Excellent job, Jeffrey Eugenides.
