About this listen
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.
Dorothea Brooke is an outstanding heroine; Middlemarch is filled with characters that are vivid and true, comic and moving. It is one of the greatest novels in the English language.

All consuming
Great audio book. It has totally disrupted my life over the last days because I've stayed awake to listen, not been able to work because I couldn't stop listening and thinking about it whilst not listening. Really brilliant reading and I will be totally bereft when it finishes in about an hours' time. Best audio book I've had for ages.

Highly recommended
If Oscars were awarded for audio-book narrations, Juliet Stephenson would surely be in the front line to win several for her multiple performances in Middlemarch. This inordinately long book is made to feel considerably shorter by her fine portrayals, giving each separate character his or her own distinctive voice.

A triumph!
I knew this book to be excellent but I was not prepared for such a feat of narration. Juliet Stevenson is outstanding! She creates a million different voices so that each character is instantly recognizable, and just seems to add to Eliot's depth of meaning. Every day I long to put my earphones in and just immerse myself in the story. Unmissable!!

A great experience
What a privilege it was to listen to this wonderful book. Juliet Stevenson puts in a really great performance and brings the characters, the subtle differences in status and character, to life and this makes such a huge difference to the enjoyment of the book. Couldnt recommend it more highly.

George Eliot's Genius
The opening chapters of this book are fairly off-putting. Dorothea is a prig, her sister Celia is tiresome, Casaubon is painful, but don't be discouraged. As the author gets into her stride the characters take on a depth that at times surpasses even Austen's characters. There are some very humourous moments and some of great pathos. The story doesn't ever crack on at a pace, but if you understand delayed gratification you will enjoy this book. Stevenson's ability to inhabit dozens of characters is wonderful, and although a few of the voices grate it is worth persevering. Rosamund Vincy is a tour de force, one of English literature's undiscovered female protagonists. Read this book, you won't regret it!

The Archers as literature ...
Title a bit tongue in cheek, though there were parts of the book that were very slow and did not seem to advance either the characters or the plot/plots. What got me through the first half of the book, which really is too long, was Juliet Stevenson's utterly brilliant narration and ability to give life and individuality to so many characters. I have put an extensive review of my impressions on Goodreads. If you like everyday tales of country folk and enjoy Austen, Trollope or Hardy and have plenty of time for listening, you should give this a go. If you don't have much time, seek out an abridged version. And if the classics mentioned are not to your taste, you will hate this!

I have read it and loved it over the years. Wonderful performance by Juliet Stephenson. It is long but well worth the effort.

Great listen!
What a fantastic story - wonderfully written and excellently performed!
I agree with some of the other reviewers that it took a while to get into the story. But gradually I got hooked and now that it's finished I already miss it!
I thoroughly recommend this book!

The genius of George Eliot brought alive
A wonderful performance by Juliet Stevenson, who absolutely brought it to life. Have just finished all 45 hours and wish it could have been longer.
